A Message from the Superintendent
As this semester comes to a close, we are mindful of the great students you send to us every school day. I continue to be amazed by the tremendous accomplishments of your students, both inside and outside of the classroom. Thank you for your strong partnership as we work together to provide learning experiences which are second to none.
The district will be closed from Monday, December 19th through Monday, January 2nd, and will reopen on Tuesday, January 3rd. Please accept my warmest wishes for a wonderful holiday break with your families and loved ones. If I may be of any assistance to you over the break, please feel free to contact me on my mobile phone: 972.415.8129.
District of Innovation
For those of you who have been in the district for at least two years, you know we typically approve a new calendar in December for the upcoming two school years. This process has been delayed, as we are currently pursuing the designation of a District of Innovation. Districts with an approved Innovation designation have flexibility as to the start of the school year, which then gives more flexibility for the calendar during the school year. It will probably be February before our board approves a calendar for the 2017-2018 school year. The process this year will be:
- Two or three draft calendars will be developed.
- District staff will vote on the proposed calendars.
- The calendars will go out to the parent community for their votes. Parents will be informed of the preferences selected by our staff.
- After the community has voted, the preferred option will go to our board for approval.
Silver Star Employees
The Board of Trustees will meet this evening for their regular board meeting. Tonight, we will implement a new tradition of "Silver Star" designations. Jennifer Larsen, LHS Class of 2010, will be the first recipient of this new designation. Jennifer is the first Lovejoy alumna to return to Lovejoy as a teacher. We look forward to the opportunity to honor many future Lovejoy alumni with the "Silver Star."

On December 10th and 11th, the Lovejoy Lacrosse Varsity team competed in the Big D Fiesta Claxic Tournament in Lewisville to close out their Fall season. The team competed against other high school and select lacrosse teams from Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. After playing four games in pool play, the Lovejoy team earned the #2 seed in the playoffs. The team advanced to the Championship game against True KS (Kansas). The Varsity team played tough, but lost 3-4 in overtime in a hard fought Championship game. Overall, the Lovejoy Lacrosse Varsity team finished in 2nd place in the two-day tournament, and brought home the silver medal.
Three LHS Orchestra students recently competed at the TMEA All State Orchestra Competition. The competition consists of three rounds. First, students must make the All Region Orchestra. Then they submit a recording to be judged in two rounds. The first round eliminates half of the competitors. In the second/final round of Area Orchestra, roughly 20% are selected for All State Orchestra.
Anthony Tang (LHS/11th), Andrew Chang (LHS/10th) and Daniel Xue (LHS/10th) all qualified for the final round of judging, which is called All Area Orchestra.
In addition, Anthony Tang was selected as a member of the All State Orchestra. Congratulation to Anthony (pictured below), Andrew and Daniel.
A Message from the Deputy Superintendent
Dear Lovejoy Community:
As we conclude this semester, I wanted to share an update about some of the important work occurring in the district. Last spring, several parents volunteered to join our STEM Advisory Council. As you know, each year the Lovejoy ISD Board of Trustees defines the top priorities for the district. This is the second academic year in which they have identified a priority to enhance and develop a nationally known STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program in Lovejoy ISD.
Lovejoy ISD has had a STEM Council since last spring, which is comprised of selected Science, Technology, Engineering and Math teachers from grades 5-12. Our STEM Council also includes our campus and district leaders for Sloan Creek Intermediate School, Willow Springs Middle School and Lovejoy High School. In our quarterly meetings, we have defined short-term and long-term goals for STEM education in Lovejoy. It has been evident that our goals may be grouped into the categories of courses offered, projects/experiences for students, student competitions, district partnerships, and student/teacher internships or teacher professional development.
Last week, our STEM Advisory Council met in the new STEM wing at Lovejoy High School. In addition to brainstorming, the Council explored possibilities to improve STEM education and experiences in Lovejoy, and had a demonstration from some of our robotics students (Brock Mordecai, Max Hooper, and Ryan Luther) as they finalized preparations for their competition season.
LHS Robotics team members and STEM Advisory Council members are pictured above.
I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year.
