A Message from the Superintendent

Dear  Lovejoy Community:

I hope you and your family enjoyed a great Spring Break.  Ours was spent with grandchildren and family. It was great to welcome your students back to school on Monday.
It's hard to believe we are nearing the end of March, and will be celebrating our 8th graduating class in just a couple of months.  As you may know, the class of 2017 will be the Centennial graduating class.  In preparation of the Centennial celebration, the district held a Centennial Logo Art Contest.  We received almost 90 entries for this contest and will be announcing the winner the 1st week in April.  Thank you to all of the students who participated and shared their talent and creativity with us.
The School Board will meet this evening to approve the school calendars for 2017-2018 and 2018-2019.  Links to the approved calendars will be available tomorrow on the district's website , and Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Prior to Spring Break, Hart and Lovejoy Elementary students travelled to Waco and Austin to experience fourth grade Texas History.  Students visited the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, the Texas State Capitol, and the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.
Hart 4th graders are pictured below:

Lovejoy 4th graders are pictured below:

Puster 4th graders will travel to Waco and Austin on May 19th.  We look forward to sharing their Capitol photograph with you then.

LHS Journalism
The Red Ledger was one of just six online newspapers to receive a Gold Crown in the digital publication division from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) this past Friday. The award, the highest given by CSPA, was announced at a ceremony at Columbia University in New York City, and broadcast via Facebook Live on the CSPA page (at around the 36:40 mark).
Just before spring break, The Red Ledger was also named one of 38 finalists for the Pacemaker award from the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA). The winners will be announced at the NSPA national convention in Seattle next month.
Together, the Crown and Pacemaker awards are the two highest honors a high school publication can receive. Congratulations to the editors-in-chief Jillian Sanders, Hallie Fischer and Caroline Smith who have totaled four Crowns and three Pacemaker finalists in their high school careers.

LHS Art Show
The 1st Annual Lovejoy Visual Arts Portrait Show is currently on display in the Lovejoy High School Art Gallery.  This K-12 exhibit is a showcase of how our young artists represent themselves and others through portraiture. The concept of identity, both through representation and abstraction, is a core thread in every Lovejoy art studio, and is explored through a plethora of media and art forms. This exhibition celebrates the range of approaches used to explore identity at all age levels, and is a spectacular body of work to begin the tradition of a yearly Portrait Show.  The show will be open daily during school hours through April 7th.

Mr. Mead's 6th grade class had the opportunity to Skype with the scientists in Africa over the course of the excavation before it was ever announced. This species of human ancestor is believed to be 900,000 to 2 billion years old and was an incredible find. Mr. Mead will be sharing stories about the discovery, as well as his outstanding photos. Donors may donate as little as 8 inches, but more if they please. The hair cannot have been chemically treated, have more than 5% grays, or be dyed permanently. Anyone, any age may donate.    Click here to register to donate.
