A Message from the Superintendent

Dear  Lovejoy Community:

I hope this finds you and your family settling back into a regular routine, and your students enjoying the start of the second semester.

This past Sunday, we held the annual Advanced Academics Banquet where 255 scholars were recognized for their academic achievements.  Please take time to read the Deputy Superintendent, Dennis Muizers', message in this edition of Email Express as he shares details of the accomplishments of these scholars.  Special thanks to the Foundation for Lovejoy Schools for their sponsorship of this event.

Events like the Advanced Academics Banquet serve as a consistent reminder of how blessed we are to be a part of the Lovejoy community, which is made up of incredible staff, students, and parents.  We are diligent in our efforts to provide the highest level of learning experiences for your students.  If you see an area in which we may improve, please call on me.  As always, you may reach me on my cell phone at:  972.415.8129.

Cross Country Coach Greg Christensen
Congratulations to Coach Greg Christensen on his nomination for the 2016 UIL Sponsor Excellence Award.  School administrators from across the state nominated teachers, directors, and coaches for this recognition.  The UIL states, "The accomplishments of each of these nominees clearly demonstrate the high level of dedication, care, and achievement you all share as exemplary sponsors of UIL events."

Lovejoy High School Speech and Debate
Congratulations to the LHS Speech and Debate team for earning the 2015-2016 Leading Chapter Award for Lovejoy's National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) District. This award is based on student participation in competitions. Only one school in each district earns this designation each year. Out of more than 3,000 member schools nationwide, the LHS team is one of only 110 teams to receive this award. This award reflects 377 memberships and degrees earned by the students over the past 5 years.

A Message from the Deputy Superintendent

Dear Lovejoy Community:

On Sunday, January 8th, the Advanced Academic Banquet was held to honor 255 scholars.  I am always proud to attend this event as we recognize College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Scholars, as well as students earning distinction in the National Merit Program.

The AP Program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through AP courses and exams with the AP Scholar Awards.  The College Board has 4 levels of AP Scholars:

AP Scholar
Granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.

AP Scholar with Honor
Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams

AP Scholar with Distinction
Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams

National AP Scholar
Granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

Approximately 40% of the graduating classes from LHS earn an AP Scholar distinction.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year.

It is a pleasure to share the Lovejoy High School Advanced Academic Scholars with you.

This event always features a keynote speaker.  This year, we celebrated our 2nd year of a new tradition inviting an AP Scholar alum to join us as the speaker.  Zach Mobley, 2010 National AP Scholar and LHS Class of 2010 Valedictorian, joined us as our Distinguished Speaker.

Zach graduated from Texas A&M in May of 2014 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. He met his wife, Emilie, at A&M during his Freshman year. They were married in May of 2015.  She is a 7th grade science teacher at a charter school on the west side of Houston.

Zach started working at Kaneka North America, a mid-size chemical plant in Pasadena TX, in June of 2016, as a Project Engineer. He recently received a promotion and is moving to the production side of the business where he will focus more on day-to-day operations of the plant and generating ideas for process improvements.

It was great to have Zach return home to Lovejoy.

We would like to extend a special thank you to the Foundation for Lovejoy Schools for their generous support and sponsorship of the Advanced Academic Banquet.  The Foundation's unwavering support of Lovejoy ISD plays an important role in enriching the experiences of our students and staff.

We hope you love where you have chosen for your child to learn.  If you have feedback to help us improve, please do not hesitate to contact me on my cell at 214.385.1967 or via email at dennis_muizers@lovejoyisd.net .

Respectfully,
Dennis Muizers

Lovejoy High School Performing Arts Presents
Fiddler on the Roof:  January 19 - 21
A classic, timeless journey of love, loss, faith, and family.
The tradition of great musicals continues at Lovejoy High School with this year's musical, Fiddler on the Roof, January 19th through 21st at 7:00 PM.

Set in the small Russian town of Anatevka in 1905, Fiddler on the Roof tells a story of faith, family, and tradition. Tevye (played by senior, Trace Glorioso) tries to preserve his family's traditions in a changing world. He is forced to choose between maintaining his Jewish culture and the happiness of his three eldest daughters, Tzeitel (sophomore, Adelyn Maruca), Hodel (senior, Zoe Kahana), and Chava (junior, Renae Haas).

From laughter-inducing lines to memorable music, Fiddler on the Roof is a show for everyone, featuring characters audiences will fall in love with, such as the local matchmaker, Yente (senior, Abby Yaegar), the village butcher, Lazar Wolfe (junior, Vinny Horlock), and the poor lovestruck tailor, Motel (junior, Ryan Hyde).

The show offers iconic and beloved songs such as "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "Tradition," and "The Dream," making it a perfect mix of audience-pleasing humor and heart.

Tickets are $16 for adults and $12 for students, faculty and seniors. Click here to purchase tickets online.  The physical box office, located in front of the LHS auditorium, will be open the week of the show, January 16th through 20th.
