Artists! We're accepting submissions for the 2015 MI Arts Competition

$3000 in awards!

Every year the Arts Council hosts MI Arts, the All Michigan, All Media Visual Arts Competition. Artists from all over the state submit paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and ceramics. A juror narrows the submissions down and selects winners. This is a popular exhibit, and a great opportunity for artists to get exposure.

We'd like to introduce our juror,
Lisa Walcott!
Lisa Walcott is a Midwest based installation artist and kinetic sculptor whose work explores relationships to space and cycles of deterioration and growth, through various subtle gestural objects. Walcott received her MFA in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2010 and has continued to create and exhibit nationally. Her work explores mundane, extracted moments from familiar spaces ultimately giving lyricism to the unseen and visual articulation to the unsaid.

Bluegrass Jam this week!

Thursday, May 21
5:30 - 8:00 pm
Padnos Gallery

The Holland Area Arts Council and the Hope College Music Department have cooked up another partnership idea!
You've loved the Brown Bag Lunch concerts, and now, under the leadership of Hope's Nate Roberts, we are offering the community the opportunity to experience American folk music with our new series, Bluegrass Jam Sessions!

On the third Thursday of every month, a House Band of area musicians will play in our Padnos Gallery for backup. We welcome you to bring your own instruments and join in. The first hour (from 5:30 to 6:30) will be designated specifically as a "Slow Jam," so musicians of all levels should feel welcome to come and play! There will be lots of sharing musical traditions, but most of all - lots of fun!

This program is FREE and we encourage all ages to attend. There is no requirement to participate in the jam - you can just come and enjoy the music.

Each day Douglas will give a short demonstration with discussions on composition, massing, building form, light and shadow, depth, atmospheric images and how to know when your piece is finished. You'll study these principles of design and paint while creating a landscape or seascape painting, working in your own style. Most importantly, you'll have class time to put paint to canvas, ask questions, and get one-on-one feedback on your oil painting practice.

The Human Canvas
Armstrong Gallery
May 16-30

Since around five thousand BC, humans have been toying with the most permanent form of self-expression - tattoos. They hold a place on nearly every surface of the globe, embedded in different cultures, and rich with varying perspectives. Sammi Frankhouse and Ella Rocker, seniors at Black River Public School, decided to delve deep into this trend. Their exhibit offers extensive research on tattoos; specifically, the history of tattoos, the role they play in different cultures, the science behind this permanent form of art, and how they are perceived socially.

In addition to their research, the students will display the results of a social experiment they have been conducting over the past month and a half. The Human Canvas  will deliver a unique perspective on what is beneath the surface of tattoos, as well as the people they are displayed on.

Chroma and Copper: A Fusion of Sculpture and Paint
Padnos Gallery
May 24 - June 8

Bette DelVecchio  worked as a bank loan officer to pay the bills, but hoped to find an outlet to feed her eclectic soul. After a varied career that spanned the steel industry, single motherhood, real estate and banking, Bette began searching for a medium of expression that harkened back to her days in the artistic areas of Pennsylvania where she grew up. She spotted her vision in a lump of clay after moving to the shores of Lake Michigan. Soon she was working to hone her craft as a potter. Several years ago, Bette began to explore the wonderful world of acrylic painting.

Daryl Bruischat studied printmaking and sculpture as a graduate student with Takashi Takahara. He has traveled the world extensively, mostly for his work designing and engineering environmental chambers.  After a horrific accident left him fighting for life, he has turned his attention to art. He traces his mobility and current health on the physical and spiritual healing qualities of art. Bruischat's sculptural work is created from heating and cooling variously shaped copper pieces in a series of rapid movements, then assembling the various brilliant colored pieces into works that gather the eye then the mind around the abstract composition.

Their contrasting backgrounds and varied methods of creating blend in this short exhibition -- not one to miss!
