As much as I still miss the first day of school, after teaching all those years, I also miss the feeling of the last. This week, most of the schools in Salem finished for the summer. What I have loved about summer since I started going to school at the age of 3, was the change in routine.
Now, not everyone is comfortable with change. For some, it is downright frightening. Some of this might be a result of the way change is approached.
Although God encourages us to develop holy habits, routines that remind us and draw us more fully to the divine, God will be the first one to shake things up too. God encourages us to embrace brave change; not change for change sake, and not because it is fashionable. God encourages us to find the holy in the "in between places;" those areas and times in our lives when we bravely approach life from a different, and maybe courageous, point of view.
I am looking forward to discovering God in my non-routine daily life. I am looking forward to looking at things from a different angle, with a sunnier, warmer, and more re-creational point of view. As I travel this summer, visiting with family and friends I rarely get to see, I hope I embrace the opportunities for growth and change that summer affords.

Above you see a photograph from one of our windows of "The Sacrifice of Isaac." This is also our story from the Jewish Scripture this week, as we continue stories from the Book of Genesis. Last week, Abraham was asked, in a way, to sacrifice his son Ismael. This week, it is the sacrifice of his son from Sarah that tests his faith.
All children of any faith (or none) are invited to join us at 10:30 am for the Abundant Life Garden Project. In its fifth year, this program teaches the children how to work together to grow vegetables which they then give to various food pantries.
This week, we begin Punch on the Patio following the 10:30 am service. Come and enjoy some light refreshments as we share conversation.
At 5:00 pm, Kathleen Tone will offer the reflection. The music will come from the Celtic tradition, as well as the prayers and poetry. The theme during the summer months is "A Season of Rest." All are welcome to come to this quiet and reflective time with God and one another.
Please join us wherever you are in your search for meaning.

From May through October, our children are engaged with Episcopal Relief and Development's Program, "The Abundant Life Garden Project." Abundant Life Garden Project is an interactive, Scripture-based children's program offered to parishes, teachers, families and others who seek to share the ministry and work of Episcopal Relief & Development with young students. This program invites children to participate by exploring five thematic lessons on Water, Seeds, Soil, Animals and Harvest.
Melissa Barnes is the lead teacher of this program. Each week, the students gather in the classroom for a short lesson on one of the themes, relating it to God's love for the world and our promises to God made at our baptism. The class then goes out into the garden, located on the front patio, and works to grow vegetables that are then shared with the community in need. All children, whether they attend church or not, are welcome to come and join us any Sunday at 10:30 am.

eginning July 5 and running throughout the summer, Sal
em is offering free meals again to everyone 18 and younger at a number of sites in the City. One of these sites is the Library across the street.
We, at Grace Church, are concerned about food sources for those families over the weekend. So on the Fridays during the weeks that lunch will be offered at the library, we will invite families to come to Grace Church for bags of groceries.
In these grocery bags will be a recipe card for a healthy meal, such as a casserole, that will provide two meals for a family of four. All the ingredients for these recipes will be included in the bags. There will be other fresh produce included as well.
Paige Nalipinski is the team leader for this project. Why not give her a call (or email) and see how you can help in some way? We need people to help bag the groceries each Friday and others to be present to hand them out from 11:00 to 12:00 pm. If you have menu ideas, send them along too.
Jesus calls us to "feed my sheep." Here is a very little thing we can do that will make a big impact.
