University of Nevada, Reno -Joe Crowley Student Union

The 6th National Collegiate Recovery Conference is designed to facilitate a greater understanding about Collegiate Recovery Communities and Programs and their essential role in colleges and universities across the nation. It will provide an opportunity for CRC and CRP staff and students to connect, network with one another and gain knowledge pertinent to establishing and maintaining strong recovery activities and programs for students and allies. In addition, clinicians and families/significant others will learn how to develop communities, provide support, assist in research, or advocate for recovery and collegiate recovery communities.

Honesty is Still the Best Policy

For people with addiction in their past, telling the whole truth on job applications may feel risky, but Teresa Wren Johnston, director of the Kennesaw State University Center for Young Adult Addiction and Recovery (CYAAR), says it's the right choice. "Online job applications almost always ask if you've ever been arrested,"she says. "Students come to us and ask if they should lie, because they're fearful about not getting a job."Johnston founded the KSU CYAAR and has been the director for eight years.

"One student answered truthfully and came to us concerned that he'd ruined his chance to get a face-to-face interview,"she continues. "He never heard from that particular employer, so he didn't know if his admission that he'd been arrested was a factor or not."

The UT System is the only system of higher education in the nation to make this level of commitment to students by funding comprehensive programs at each academic campus, said Chris Brownson, associate vice president for student affairs at UT Austin. UT Austin, a national leader in the collegiate recovery movement, is leading the Systemwide implementation, which began in 2012 with an initial allocation of $1 million from the Board of Regents.
