Have you and/or a member of your household done an hour or more of volunteer work this summer?
Several members of our congregation have helped make this a "Tzedakah Summer" and raise money for Beth Emet's Tzedakah Fund. They have volunteered at Evanston-area organizations such as Connections for the Homeless, The Youth Job Center, Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, Random Acts of Flowers, Curt's Cafe, Beth Emet's own Soup Kitchen and Shabbat Connections, and many more important institutions.
For each hour of service, an anonymous supporter is donating $18 to the Beth Emet Tzedakah Fund in the name of each of the first 54 congregants (of any age) between June 1 and August 31—possibly raising at least $972 for the Tzedakah fund.
If you or someone in your family would like to participate, please email
Paul Fields with the name of the organization who benefited from you Tzedakah. For more details, visit the Social Action section of EmetMail.

Donate Supplies for the CDF Freedom Schools
Support our District 65 kids this summer as they learn at the Freedom School, a Children’s Defense Fund project for fourth through sixth graders. Beth Emet has been asked to contribute snacks and art supplies the kids need. The Freedom School focuses on literacy and creative arts and
runs until Friday, August 5. Go to
CDF Freedom Schools® for more information. Please contribute to this effort to close achievement gaps and curb summer learning loss.
The 50 kids attending need non-peanut snack bars and/or fresh fruit that won’t perish quickly. The art supply list includes items you may already have at home:
- Crayons, colored pencils, markers, pens and pencils
- Scissors, rulers, glue, tape, staplers, and staples
- Paint and paintbrushes, pipe cleaners, colored tissue paper
- Level 2 butcher paper, chart paper, writing and drawing paper
- Paper cups, index cards, old magazines
A drop-off box is in the Beth Emet School hallway. We’ll bring donations to the School twice a week throughout the program. School started this week, so please contribute soon and then again as often as you can. Thank you!

Meditation for Renewal
Shabbat mornings, August 20, 27, September 3, 10, 17, 24, October 1, 8
9:00-9:25 a.m. with Rabbi Andrea London and Rabbi Cindy Enger
During the period between Tisha B’Av (the 9th of Av) and Rosh Hashanah, we prepare for the new year by making the journey from brokenness to renewal, from separation to connection. On Tisha B'Av, we commemorate the destruction of the Temples in Jerusalem, the Jewish people's various exiles, and recognize the ways in which we personally are in a state of spiritual exile. On Rosh Hashanah, we celebrate the new year and the possibility of beginning again. In order to facilitate our spiritual evolution during this powerful time and on the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (Shabbat Shuvah), Rabbis London and Enger will lead Shabbat morning meditations focused on the themes of renewal and self-discovery as reflected in the weekly passages of consolation we read from the Book of Isaiah on these Shabbatot.
