The Power of the Table
Each year at this time I am reminded of the power of sitting around the table. At our Passover Seders we retell the collective narrative of the Jewish people’s journey from slavery to freedom, and we think and ask questions about our own story. On Shabbat I would argue one of our more power rituals is to gather around the Shabbat table, tuning out the rest of the world and reconnecting with one another and with everything real. And it is around our tables that the values, stories and wisdom of our tradition have been handed down from one generation to the next. The table becomes a sacred place of sorts, a place where we offer each other our precious gifts and we nurture and nourish one another.

It is in that spirit that I encourage you to participate in two upcoming powerful experiences around the dining table. Next Tuesday evening, May 10th Beth Emet will be participating in On the Table, an initiative to bring people together from our greater community who have varying perspectives and backgrounds for thoughtful conversations about issues of race, justice, and equity. In collaboration with the Chicago Community Trust’s On the Table initiative and in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s march through Chicago Marquette Park, it is the hope that this dining experience will generate new collaborations and activities that will make our community safer, stronger and more dynamic. Check online for more information and to find out how you can sign up. You can also read a recent story in the Evanston Review, “Shout Out: Rabbi Andrea London looks to stir community discussion.”

Within our own community there is Beth Em-eats, 11 unique, intimate dining opportunities, hosted and prepared by our own Beth Emet members, where the food will not only nourish your soul but nurture your connection to our synagogue and the members who make our community so special. All proceeds of Beth Em-eats supports our operations, with the goal to raise $10,000. There are still some seats open, and you can sign up online

I look forward to sharing in the power of the table with you!
