The year is almost over and Empowering Minds is so grateful for all the joys and blessings we've received in 2017. We hope you're bundling up during these winter months and feeling some holiday cheer! Below you'll find pictures from Empowering Minds' Thanksgiving last month, information on our events this December, information on winter shelters and resources, some FREE Baltimore Metropolitan Holiday events, and agency news and updates. Empowering Minds' Thanksgiving
|
|
On Thanksgiving Day, Empowering Minds staff volunteered at Rosemont Tower and packed 200 boxes of Thanksgiving food for home-bound and low-income residents. Thanks for having us Rosemont Tower!
|
|
Staff also had our own Thanksgiving meal at our Baltimore office. Tasty food, great company, and gratitude for our clients and community partners.

Helping Hands Holiday Event
|
|
Empowering Minds is excited for our annual Helping Hands Holiday Event coming up this December! There will be a free dinner, free cleaning supplies, toys for kids, arts and crafts activities, a raffle, bingo, entertainment, and a ton of holiday cheer! Below you can find some pictures from last year's events.

There is a waiting list to enter into Winter Relief. The following guidelines apply to the waiting list:
- To get on the waiting list, an individual must come into the Day & Resource Center and sign up
- An individual may also sign up by calling the Arundel House of Hope by calling (410) 863 – 4888 and leaving a message on the Winter Relief Ext.The waiting list is filled on a first-come, first-serve basis
- Call after 7:00 AM to leave a message on the Winter Relief Ext.
- When leaving a message, clearly state your name, and what time your are calling
- Clearly say that you would like to have your name put on the waiting list
- If you have adult family members coming with you, say their names as well (no one under 18 years of age may be sheltered in Winter Relief)
- If you don’t get in one night, you can always call back or come in the following day
- The waiting list refreshes each night
- That means, the next morning, there is an all-new and empty waiting list

HCAA has a food pantry Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. It also provides assistance through an Electric Universal Support Program, the Maryland Energy Assistance Program, homeless services, and case management. If you want to enter a shelter in Harford County, this is the first place you should go!

Hope for the Homeless Alliance provides a day and night shelter, which starts December 18 and continues until March (depending on weather). It will provide transportation to and from the day and night shelter. The day shelter is from 8am-4:30 and the night shelter is 5pm- 7:30am. You must go through Harford Community Action Agency to access these services.

FREE Holiday Events and Activities

Washington Monument
December 4th 5-8 PM
The Washington Monument annual lighting and firework show. There is also live music, refreshments, and special activities at venues, like the
Walters Art Museum
.

Olde Tyme Christmas Festival
Dec. 6. All day
Fells Point will have a holiday market, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and the Parade of Lighted Boats.

Mayor's Annual Christmas Parade
Dec. 7. 1 PM
There will be floats, motorcycles, marching units, and Santa. The 2.5-mile route starts at Poly/Western high schools, crosses Cold Spring Lane and continues south on Falls Road to 36th Street, turns east on 36th Street, turns north on Chestnut Avenue, and ends on 37th Street.

New Years Annapolis
December 31, 2017. 3 PM
Behind Maryland Hall and Bates Middle School. Activities will include face painting, an obstacle course, moon bounce and music performed by kids’ rock bands. Be sure to stay for the 5:30 p.m. fireworks. The celebration continues with live music and dancing at Susan Campbell Park and the City Dock at 8 p.m. and leads to a countdown to the New Year and midnight fireworks.

Candy Cane Hunt
December 2nd, 10AM-1PM at the MACC in Gambrills, MD
Dozens of holiday vendors, crafters, small businesses to shop from. Each with a craft, game, activity or special treat for your child.

Ava Nishita-Hawkinson
as the agency's employee of the month. She
is an excellent Community Outreach Coordinator. She is a team player and provides our clients with care and an abundance of resources. She goes over and beyond to assist our clients with housing, transportation and other supportive services. She volunteers her time after hours to participate in agency sponsored programs Her hard work and diligence to support our clients is commendable and her ability to work with employees and clients and support them has contributed to the success of Empowering Minds and the services we offer.
