I hope you are enjoying what's left of summer this year. As we go roaring back into fall, here are some thoughts about how to take advantage of the change of season.
Start Your New Routines Now!
The start of school is an ideal moment to introduce new routines into your life and into your household. It seems fair game to make any number of little changes at this time of year when everything feels like a new beginning.

This is a more auspicious time for making 'resolutions' to do better at looking after your own health and wellness than the middle of winter when you are just trying to get to the end of the cold and dark!

Start now to exercise a little more, to drink more water, and to eat with your wellbeing in mind at least some of the time! Check out my Facebook group called "Better Lunch Next Time" to learn how to start wherever you are and do what you can to gently inch toward a healthier lunchtime for yourself and/or your family. I'll keep it stocked with tips, recipes and inspiration.
Family Mealtime
If you have children of any age at home, one of the most worthwhile new routines you can make in your household is making time to eat all together. If it can't be every night, try to make it a regular event even once a week.

This  article from the Washington Post is one of many recent pieces extolling the benefits of family mealtime for kids. Apart from helping them learn good table manners and expanding their palate for a range of foods, it's an important time for sharing the events of the day and working through all kinds of little problems.

In fact, it is now known that eating together as a family is more important to academic success than any of the activities you are rushing through dinnertime to get to! Research has shown that "Adolescents who ate family meals five to seven times a week were twice as likely to get A's in school as those who ate dinner with their families fewer than two times a week."  That's pretty impressive!

If you have to make one change in your house that will bring the most results, including increased emotional wellbeing, create an important, inviolable space for the ritual of family meals as often as you can, whether your children are toddlers or teenagers. "Kids who eat dinner with their parents experience less stress and have a better relationship with them."

If the concept of eating all together at the dining table feels foreign or daunting, I encourage you to learn more about how to get started with this wonderful resource called The Family Dinner Project. They even have tips about how to start a conversation with your kids on all sorts of topics from current events to problems at school and more. Start a regular Friday night pizza ritual and see where that leads!

Little Tools

Here's a little video demonstration!

Trust IKEA to come up with some stylish and dignified child-sized kitchen tools! There is no better way to encourage kids to eat more fruits and vegetables than to get them to help prepare the food themselves. When I saw this small but functional knife and peeler, I wished I had a little person in my house to get it for...then I realized I have little people in my home office all the time!

I have a complimentary  SMABIT knife and vegetable peeler set for anyone who makes an appointment with me for a little person in their life until the end of September. Alternatively, I can offer a cute lunchbox with removable insert sections in case a knife doesn't seem like quite the right thing for your little person....!

First Day Jitters?
It's that time again, and if you have a child going back to school, or perhaps starting daycare, you can relate to how difficult this can be for some kids. It can even be difficult for some parents!

I wrote a blog about this some time ago that I want to share since this back-to-school season comes around again every year.

Not all kids express their unease in the same way. For most, a parent's love and understanding will soothe their fears and insecurities but if your child needs some extra help, here are some suggestions.

If separation anxiety seems to be the main problem and your child is becoming clingy and weepy, a little PULSATILLA could be a big help. Try a dose or two of the 30C potency.

If nervousness is about a difficult new teacher or bullies at the school, your child might be acting angry, defiant or bossy. If that's the case, LYCOPODIUM is a good remedy to think of, especially if they often have trouble with new situations.

In other cases, GELSEMIUM can help a general feeling of malaise or illness that comes when anything that feels like an ordeal is around the corner.

Every household should have a little bottle of Rescue Remedy on hand for times like this. It lasts indefinitely if properly stored and can be used for many of life's upsets and anxious moments...for adults too! 2 drops from the dropper bottle in a cup of water can be sipped over an hour or all day as needed. You can even put it in a water bottle to take to school - it's like a magic potion that helps you overcome all the possible scary moments of the day!

If you remember difficulties going back to school as a youngster, you might find yourself getting emotional for a few days without any reason. Try a little Rescue Remedy for yourself to help your nervous system relax and rebalance. If you are the parent of a child having a hard time

As always, I am very grateful for your trust and for referring your friends and relatives!

Sincerely,
