Cooperstown Summer Music Festival

The Festival kicks-off July 3 at 3 pm at The Farmers' Museum with the National Jazz Museum in Harlem All Stars.

 

The All Stars feature: Loren Schoenberg, leader and tenor saxophone; Etienne Charles, trumpet; Tom Artin, trombone; Jon Gordon, alto saxophone; James Chirillo, guitar; Frank Tate, bass; and Kevin Dorn, drums. (See Artist Bios below to learn more about the All Stars, a great mix of rising stars and seasoned jazz veterans.)

 

The Farmers' Museum

In honor of Independence Day, The Farmers' Museum is holding an Americana Weekend July 3 and 4. On Sunday, July 3, Museum activities include free ice cream for the first 500 visitors, and a hot dog competition that features hot dogs from baseball stadiums from around the country.  Come enjoy all-American favorites: Ice Cream, Hot Dogs and JAZZ!  More information about The Farmers' Museum and its exhibits and events is on their web site.    

And, if you purchase your concert ticket by July 1, you can receive half-price admission to The Farmers' Museum or the Fenimore Art Museum on July 3. If you are a NYSHA member and attend the concert, you can receive a free 2011 Festival poster, designed by Milton Glaser.

ARTIST BIOS  

A historian by nature, Loren Schoenberg became a fixture in the jazz world with his encyclopedic knowledge about the genre and passion for preserving its past while making it eminently contemporary. Today, in addition to his work performing, conducting, writing, and teaching, Schoenberg has been named Executive Director of The Jazz Museum in Harlem. Loren Schoenberg has been a faculty member at the Juilliard School, the New School, the Manhattan School of Music, among others. In addition, he has lectured at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The White House and the New York Philharmonic. Schoenberg has conducted the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) as well as The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, and The American Jazz Orchestra. A tenor saxophonist/pianist, he has played and recorded with Benny Carter, Benny Goodman, Jimmy Heath, Buck Clayton, the JLCO and was musical director for Bobby Short. He received a Grammy award for best album notes in 1994 and 2004.

 

Schoenberg oversaw the Benny Goodman Archives at Yale University, where he produced a ten-CD release of previously unissued Goodman recordings. He has taught for several Jazz at Lincoln Center education programs, including Band Director Academy and Jazz 101 adult education classes. He is currently Program Director of Jazz Aspen Snowmass. Mr. Schoenberg has been published widely (including the New York Times), and his book, The NPR Guide to Jazz, was released in 2003.

 

Jon Gordon has been a leading alto saxophonist and bandleader in New York for over 20 years. The 1996 winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, Gordon was a prot�g� of Phil Woods. Recent NYC appearances include stints at the Blue Note, Birdland, Iridum, the Jazz Standard, Jazz in July at the 92nd Street Y, the JVC Jazz Festival, and the Village Vanguard.

 

Etienne CharlesEtienne Charles is assistant professor of jazz trumpet at the Michigan State University College of Music. An alumnus of the Juilliard School, Charles recently released his second album, Folklore which employs jazz improvisation with folk rhythms inspired by the African experience of his Trinidadian roots. Charles has performed and recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Roberta Flack, the Count Basie Orchestra, Marie Schneider, and Benny Golson, among many others. In 2006, he won the National Trumpet Competition, jazz division, in Fairfax, Virginia.

 

Trombonist Tom Artin career stretches back to the 1950's, when as a Princeton student he played in a variety of traditional jazz bands. He has played with world- renowned jazz groups including the Smithsonian Jazz Repertory Ensemble, the Louis Armstrong Alumni All-Stars, the Wild Bill Davison All-Stars. He has appearedat international festivals from California to Ireland and Switzerland. He  was also the house trombonist at Eddie Condon's jazz club in New York for nearly a decade.

 

James ChirilloJames Chirillo not only plays the guitar, but is also a distinguished composer, arranger, banjoist and leader. He worked regularly with singers Marilyn Maye, Vic Damone and Lorna Luft and performed as a member of Benny Goodman's last band. He was also a charter member of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and has performed with the Lincoln Center Jazz Band, directed by Wynton Marsalis. His work as a writer has been featured on NPR's "Jazz at the Archives".

 

Bassist Frank Tate started playing when he was 23. He was leader of the house band in Washington, DC's Blues Alley. He moved to New York City in 1975 to join the Marian McPartland Trio. He also has worked with Bobby Hackett, Dave McKenna, Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson, Joe Venuti, Lionel Hampton, Zoot Sims, and Wild Bill. He accompanied singer Bobby Short for a decade at the Carlyle in NYC; and toured with Pearl Bailey for five years.

 

Kevin DornKevin Dorn is one of the busiest drummers in traditional jazz. With Gene Krupa, George Wettling and Dave Tough among his main influences, Kevin's career has included performances with many jazz legends at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Iridium Jazz Club, and the Birdland Jazz Club, He is a founding member of the Traditional Jazz Collective (the TJC), now known as The Big 72.
