We can't stop thinking about hurricanes these days and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by and preparing for Hurricane Irma. We'll hope for the best in our part of the state and wish our farmers well with the predicted wind and rain. Be sure to chat with your farmer this weekend and ask how they prep their land for inclement weather, such as hurricanes, excessive rain, snow, ice, and more. Also, be sure to spend some time outside this weekend before the storm hits our area.

As a reminder, you can pick up your button for Carolina Farm Stewardship Association's Eastern Triangle Farm Tour at the Market. On September 23 and 24, you can visit more than 26 farms, including several vendors from the Market. Stop by the Market's Info Table for a brochure or to pick up your button. This is an event you don't want to miss and is a great way to learn about sustainable growing practices in the Triangle area!

What's for dinner? Stuffed peppers!
Stuffed peppers are a simple, family favorite at this time of the year. They're easy to customize depending on you or your family's preferences and can feature a variety of produce from the Market. Fill the peppers with a grain of your choice, such as rice, quinoa or couscous. Then add a protein like beans or meat. Combine these ingredients with your favorite veggies and you'll have a nutritious, seasonal meal ready in no time!

Directions:
  1. Heat the oven to 375 degrees. Cut the tops off the peppers and arrange the base in a 9x13" baking dish with 1-inch of water in the bottom. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 10 minutes. Uncover and let cool while you prepare the filling.
  2. Saute any ingredients for the filling, such as onion, garlic, meat, veggies and more. Once cooked, remove from the heat and stir in the pre-cooked grain(s).
  3. Evenly divide the filling among the peppers and top with cheese (if desired).
  4. Bake (uncovered) until the peppers are softened for about 20 minutes. Enjoy!

Veggie Valet at the Market!
Have you checked out our Veggie Valet service yet? If you have ever struggled with carrying your groceries all the way back to your vehicle when you are done shopping, keeping your kids in tow with armloads of veggies, or simply getting around the Market with your local haul, you're going to love the Veggie Valet. This program is managed by three interns from Partners for Youth Opportunity, an organization that provides Durham youth with opportunities to connect, develop, and contribute through mentoring, employment and educational support. Say "Hi!" to our interns on Saturday and drop off your bags while you shop and enjoy the Market community.

A message from the Veggie Valet interns:
Veggie Valet is a program that helps customers by holding their groceries while they continue to shop and loading them into their car. The program is free to Durham Farmers' Market customers but we are accepting donations to cover the cost of supplies. The Veggie Valet tent is located on the corner of Foster and Hunt Street right beside the ATM!

Chapel Hill Creamery
We have Paneer and Fresh Mozzarella  this Saturday ! It's the last week for Mozzarella, so pick some up to enjoy in a salad or gently melt on toast for bruschetta. The Paneer is featured at Lantern Restaurant in a vegetarian entrée that customers love. Order that dish at the restaurant or make your own curried vegetable or greens and add our Paneer. Our is moist, rich with our Jersey cows' milk, and has a hint of lime juice, so it's more flavorful than others we've tasted.

Our Dairyland Farmers is also a fresh cheese that is a little tart. Serve it with hot pepper jelly on crackers or in tacos with mild or hot peppers. We'll also have Hickory Grove, Carolina Moon, our version of a Camembert, and Pheta. Hickory Grove is savory and semi firm, and it melts beautifully, perfect for savory, cool weather dishes. Add our Pheta to salads or pizza.

Spare Ribs for grilling! Customers come back for these for the great flavor. Pick some up for this weekend to grill or slow roast. We also have lots of our flavorful ground beef. Make a delicious cheeseburger with Hickory Grove cheese or try our recipe for stuffed peppers. Sausages include Chorizo and Mild Country Breakfast. Taste a sample of the Breakfast sausage at our table. The pigs are raised on our farm and drink the nutritious whey from cheese making and the sausages are made from the hams which gives a meaty texture and flavor. Thanks for supporting the Market and local food. See you on  Saturday!

Honeygirl Meadery
Honeygirl Meadery is a small urban meadery in downtown Durham making an ancient craft beverage for modern days. Mead is essentially wine made from honey, with many different styles that include additions of fruits, flowers and herbs. Our meads are hand-crafted libations made in small batches, using both local and global true source honey, local fruits, herbs and flowers. They are naturally gluten free. Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays 1-5 pm.

Honeygirl is now open for Fall Fridays from 4:00-8:00 pm! Join us Friday evenings after work and unwind with a glass of mead and some fun Fall activities. Check out our Facebook page for more details.  Coming up at the meadery:
  • 9/8 - Cheese and Chocolate Pairing
  • 9/15 - Cork Craft Night
This week we will be sampling: the latest release of our Hibiscus Lemonthyme Mead, floral, earthy and herbal dry-style mead with NC wildflower honey, dried hibiscus petals and fresh lemonthyme.

We will also be sampling our Blueberry Mead, made with local blueberries and NC wildflower honey. This mead has subtle plum and tart berry notes, balanced with honey sweetness. Pairs nicely with aromatic cheeses, salami, and dark chocolate.

And we will be sampling our Lavender Mead, one of our favorites for relaxing and porch settin'. This mead is made with orange blossom honey and local lavender from Sunshine Lavender Farm. It is floral, earthy and a bit savory, lightly sweet, making it perfect with a cheese plate, light summer salads, or with dark chocolate cake.  Come by for a taste!

We will also have bottles available of our oak-aged Wildwood Mead, made with dark NC wildflower honey and aged on French oak for almost two years.; and our Orange Blossom Mead, summery and lightly sweet traditional mead made with orange blossom honey.

Terra Clotha
The birthday party was almost over and Janet and Marsha were waiting at the edge of the room until they could take their toddlers home. "It looks like I'm going to have to give Amanda a bath as soon as we walk in the door. She spilled food all over her romper," Janet said. "And little Timothy over there; he's pretty much wearing his birthday cake. I wouldn't be surprised if his mother takes him outside and hoses him off before she lets him in the car. But I notice the T-shirt your little Julius is wearing looks as fresh an when he walked in the door. How does you get him to look so crisp?" Janet looked wonderingly at Marsha.

"Oh, I'm sure Julius is covered in as much mess as the rest of the kids," Marsha told her friend. "He's just wearing a hand-dyed T-shirt we got him at the Durham Farmers' Market. The irregularity of the dye process means spills and stains just blend in."

Hand-dyed children's clothes from Terra Clotha. Sure to make your children look their best.
