From the Festival Director

Randy PicOur Festival is about expanding the craft of improv. Every event is an opportunity for artists to discuss, and exchange new ideas. The performances are exciting and new for the audiences, as they are the fruits of the artists' dialogues.

Greetings!

On June 10th-17th, some of the best improv artists from around the world will converge, to Unexpected Productions' 16th International Festival of Improv. This year's theme is Wabi-sabi, Japanese for the beauty of imperfection and impermanence.

This year's Festival will feature improvisers from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Slovenia, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada and the United States.

Unexpected Productions' audiences will have the unique opportunity to see these International masters of improv during evening performances throughout the week.

This is our first major event since we have returned home to the Market Theater, at Pike Place Market.

We invite you and your friends to join us!
International Trios Wednesday  6/13 8:30 PM
International Trio LogoFrom the Three Little Pigs to the Three Stooges, three has always been an important number in comedy, theatre, and storytelling.  There is magic in threes, especially when they are improv artists from around the globe. Come see multiple trios of international teams take the stage.

Translation  Thursday 6/14  8:30 PM

translate flagDuring Translation, performers improvise in their native tongue. Someone may be speaking Japanese to someone who speaks German or Italian! Even though, the audience may not speak the language, they will understand the communication transpiring.

Word Made Flesh: Scar Stories  Friday 6/15  8:30
ScarThis improv evening is an examination of those body markings which make us imperfect and yet, also make us who we are. Everyone will be invited to show their scars, and share the story of their creation. These stories will serve as the basis for scenes improvised in the moment, and for the moment.

Wabi-sabi Improv  Saturday 6/16  8:30 PM

Wabi ShoeWabi-sabi is flea markets, not warehouse stores; aged wood, not new steel; rice paper, not glass. It celebrates cracks and crevices and all the other marks that time, weather, and loving-use leaves behind.  The improv performed on Saturday will draw from this theme, as the performers and the audience explore these concepts.
