Employment Opportunities at Spirit Rock!

"Our highest happiness is connected with the well-being of others."
-Jack Kornfield,
The Wise Heart

A Year-end Message from Jack Kornfield

Each year, the changing seasons provide wonderful opportunities for reflection. For me, as fall moves into the rains of winter there is a natural slowing down and turning inward. With so many extraordinary things happening at Spirit Rock, I find myself reflecting on the evolution of this amazing place and the greater unfolding of the Dharma in Western culture.

I am grateful and humbled to be a part of this journey, as the practice of mindfulness reaches more and more people and allows so many to awaken to the wisdom and compassion that is their true birthright...

Volunteer Profile: Jean Kinsey

Nurturing our garden, nurturing ourselves

By Sarah Laitinen, Volunteer Coordinator

If you have ever been to a Family Day at Spirit Rock, there's a good chance you've seen Jean Kinsey, one of our long-time volunteers. On those days, she can often be seen in the little Family Program garden by the meadow, standing near the 'Hiroshima Tree' as she tends to the plants and kids alike.

Jean has lived in the San Geronmio Valley near Spirit Rock for the past 30 years, so she is intimately connected with the area. She has hiked all of the nooks and crannies of the valley, raised her son here, worked at various schools in the area, and her partner is a local county supervisor... Read more >

Mary Grace Orr celebrates her 70th birthday and steps down as Guiding Teacher in Santa Cruz
Spirit Rock teacher Mary Grace Orr celebrated her 70th birthday with other teachers and Spirit Rock staff on October 19. In the photo at right, Sally Armstrong is lighting the candles for Mary Grace's birthday cake.

On December 11, Mary Grace officially stepped down from her role as Guiding Teacher of Vipassana Santa Cruz (recently renamed Insight Santa Cruz). Bob Stahl is the new Guiding Teacher there. In a letter to the community, she wrote, "I am not fully retiring. I will be living on the Big Island of Hawaii... My intention is to return periodically to Santa Cruz to teach at the center, to help lead the annual retreat, and to see students and friends. I will also continue to teach retreats, both at Spirit Rock and elsewhere in the country." We wish her all the best in her new, "somewhat saner" life!

Hameed Ali (A.H.Almaas) Benefit Event on 1/22
On Sunday, January 22, Hameed Ali (A.H. Almaas) will offer an afternoon of teachings and practices entitled "I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE" - How to Live an Enlightened Life in the upper Retreat Hall from  2 - 6 pm. The afternoon of teachings and practices will be followed by a book signing. This event is a benefit for Ridhwan Foundation and Spirit Rock Meditation Center.

A true life expresses our realization of enlightened awareness. We need to find out how to open ourselves to this awareness, to attune and join our personal life and our True Nature. This opening and attunement can be pointed out, evoked and invited. In our time together we will explore the beautiful and transformative power of enlightened awareness and the awakening that comes from it... Read more >
Scholarship Information for Daylongs & Retreats
Spirit Rock's intention is to make the teachings accessible to everyone as much as possible, and for most events no one is turned away for lack of funds. While our fees for daylongs and classes are kept as low as possible, we offer partial and full scholarships for those who cannot afford the fee.  There is also a flexible volunteer/work exchange program. To learn more and participate, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at (415) 488-0164 x 224.

Scholarships are offered for residential retreats through our scholarship fund. Selected retreats have a limited number of beds offered at a Young Adult (age 18-26) rate available on a first-come, first-served basis. Work exchange opportunities are also available in the kitchen or with housekeeping.
