PRAYER FOR THE CONVOCATION
O God, we pray for the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe as we discern and elect a Bishop to serve your people, build up your Church and proclaim boldly the Gospel to the world. Send us, we pray, an Apostle who is a wise counsellor, a merciful pastor, filled with your joy and grace. May your servant have the abundant gifts needed to lead your flock and the strength and courage to administer them. And may we renew and rededicate our lives to your will and service. All this we pray in the Name of our Great High Priest and Servant of the servants of God, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Parish Outreach: St. James in Florence
|
|
Food Bank
The St. James Food Bank helps the ever growing number of poor and homeless in Florence by offering a weekly distribution of basic groceries. The Food Bank has been running over 20 years.
Clothing and food is disributed to an average of 70 people every Thursday morning from 10:00am to 11:00am.
The Food Bank is closed on Holidays and the months of July and August. Faithful volunteers from the parish and the community do the work of shopping, organizing, cleaning and preparation for Thursdays.
Funding for the Food Bank comes from the monthly Thrift Shop sale and private donations.
Study Abroad Students
University students are most welcome at St. James Church. Many students volunteer at the weekly Food Bank, arriving early to help organize the food and clothing that is given out to those in need. Also, we regular dinners are offered at the Rectory with home-cooked meals and lively conversation.
Thrift Shop
The first Wednesday of every month (October through June) there is a Thrift Shop sale in the St. James Undercroft from 9:30 – 11:30. Proceeds go to the St. James Food Bank, the Missionarie di Carita’ (Mother Theresa Nuns) and St. James Church.
Items sold are all donations which the Shop relies on in order to thrive. People bring clothing, toys, homewares and much more.
Adult Lending Library
St. James Church provides an array of books for anyone who is looking for reading material in English. . The Adult Lending Library is open during office hours, Monday through Friday 9:00am to 1:00pm.
Children’s Lending Library
The Children’s Lending Library offers an extensive collection of children’s and young adult books. For a modest annual subscription fee (per family), parents can check out books for their little ones.
The Children’s Lending Library is hosted by St. James Church as an outreach ministry to the Florentine community and it is an independent, volunteer-run, non-denominational community service. They sponsor Halloween, Christmas and Easter parties and are often looking for volunteers to help keep the books in order, it’s a true old fashioned library!
Outreach Grants
St. James Church donates a significant amount of its income to local, national and international charities. Only non-profit organizations are eligible to receive grants. Submissions for consideration are invited and appreciated.

The Rev. Clair Ullmann
, a priest of the Convocation, and her husband
Rainer Ullmann
, direct a unique ministry of spiritual direction and local outreach in the mountains of Austria. The Chapel of the Holy Family is locate above Mühlbach am Hochkönig in the Austrian Province of Salzburg, about 45 minutes south of the city of Salzburg.
The ministry of The Rev. Clair Ullmann was well described when she received the Bishop's Award in 2010:
The Rev. Clair Ullmann, a 2010 Bishop’s Award recipient, is a woman of great wisdom, following on not only her life’s experiences, but also the attentive and deliberate way in which she has developed the many spiritual gifts from God. Many Convocation members and newcomers have experienced the warmth of the Ullmann’s hospitality at their home and retreat center, nestled under Hochkönig Mountain and surrounded by earthly treasures. There are confirmands’ retreats, women’s retreats, and couples experiencing the MAP program (
Marriage – an Adventure in Progress
). In this setting, together Rev. Clair and her husband, Rainer, minister to those seeking a quiet place to “rest in God’s presence” and to couples making that “mysterious journey of a lifetime”... marriage. Though Rev. Clair has served on many Convocation Committees, spiritual direction and mentoring remain an important focus of her ministry. This year at Convention, as she stepped down as President of the Council of Advice, Convention delegates gathered to hear her reflections on the work of the Council and the Convocation. It was a mixing of nuts and bolts, grounded in prayer. As she spoke, a vision of her leadership style emerged. Rev. Clair first heard the priestly call while working at the Episcopal Church in Florida. In 1994, she was ordained deacon at the Pro-Cathedral in Brussels, and two years later, she was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop George Carey at Canterbury Cathedral. In the Convocation, Rev. Clair serves as an assisting priest at Church of the Ascension, Munich Germany and as Vicar of the Chapel of the Holy Family in Mühlbach am Hochkönig, Austria. Rev. Clair completed her studies at Virginia Theological Seminary and The Shalem Institute, and earned a masters diploma from the University of Leuven (Belgium).
