Canadian Dressage Riders Win Individual Medals

Canadian dressage riders continued their winning ways on day two at the 2014 North American Junior Young Rider Championships held at the Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, KY.

In her first year attending the Championships, 14-year-old Camille Carier Bergeron of Mascouche, QC earned the highest score for the Junior Individual test, 70.342%. Riding Lowelas (Hockey 41 x Inster Graditz), a 14-year-old Trakehner owned by Gilles Bergeron, Carier Bergeron rode a flawless test for the victory.

"The objective today was to be very, very precise," said Carier Bergeron, who has only been riding Lowelas for three months. "Lowelas gave me everything in the test, and I'm thrilled with how we did."

Close behind Carier Bergeron, winning the individual bronze medal, was Alexandra Meghji of Toronto, ON. With Iliado II (Idilio II x Ibiza), a nine-year-old Andalusian gelding, Meghji earned a score of 67.711%.

"I'm ecstatic to be able to win the bronze medal. Yesterday, my team won the silver medal, so two medals at the show is just incredible and I could not have asked for more," said Meghji. "This is my horse's second year doing dressage and his first year at the Junior level, my goal was to have fun. Winning a medal is just icing on the cake."

Liza Wilson of Collingwood, ON, and Fleurina (Florestan I x Nouveau Roi xx), her 16-year-old Westphalian mare, finished in fourth place in the Individual test with a score of 67.658%.

In the Young Riders Individual test, David Ziegler of Beiseker, AB rode his 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding, Peninsula Top Man, who is sired by Kings Master, to a silver medal finish. The pair scored 68.289%.

"I bought Peninsula Top Man six years ago intending him to be an event horse, but he did not really like it, so we switched him over to dressage," said Ziegler. "He has come such a long way in past six months. He has really flourished and muscled up. He looks like a dressage horse now."

Tanya Strasser-Shostak of Ste. Adele, QC, and Action Time (Aktuell x Aleksander), a 14-year-old Oldenburg gelding owned by Evi Strasser, were fourth in the Individual test with 67.237%.

The Canadian Junior Rider Team, Adrien Vilcini of Selwyn, ON; Katelyn Cooper of Calgary, AB and Meagan Beunder of Calgary, AB, is all ready for tomorrow's Nations' Cup competition following the first Individual Phase One Qualifier today. Jumping a course designed by American Steve Stephens, an FEI 4* course designer, Cooper and her nine-year-old Holsteiner gelding, Casino Royale (Cassini II x Coriander), posted a clear round in a time of 75.92 seconds, which put the pair in 24th place in stiff competition. Canadian Eventers Lead Following Dressage

Hanna Bundy of Toronto, ON; Lauren Clark of Uxbridge, ON; April Simmonds of Uxbridge and Jamie Kellock of Cedar Valley, ON of Team Ontario's CH-Y** are leading after dressage with a score of 165.1. United States Area V & VI are in second with 171.9.

Currently leading the CH-Y** division is Ziegler riding his second horse of the competition, Critical Decision (Consul x Two a Day), his 18-year-old Oldenburg gelding, with a score of 46.3.

"I think Critical Decision went the best he has ever gone today," said Ziegler. "Whenever he goes into the Rolex Stadium he always brightens up quite a bit, but he relaxed throughout the whole test and had good energy."

In second, with 50.7, is Bundy riding D'Jion, her 12-year-old Mustang gelding.

"My dressage test was awesome," said Bundy. "He did everything I asked him to do. I could not have asked for a better test."

Team Ontario's CH-J* riders Emma Green of Hockley Valley, ON; Sophie Ochocinski of Brooklin, ON; Moira de Ste. Croix-Laframboise of Kars, ON and Autumn Wells of Whitby, ON are currently sitting in eighth place following the CH-J* dressage with a score of 176.1.

United States Area IV are currently leading the CH-J* with a team score of 153.7.

Riding Blue Ben, a 13-year-old Westphalian gelding sired by Gambit Z, 16-year-old de Ste. Croix-Laframboise is sitting in third place following a lovely dressage test with a score of 49.2. Blue Ben is owned by de Ste. Croix-Laframboise and her mother Teddie Laframboise.

"He went into the ring yesterday for the ring familiarization and did not look at a thing, so I was pretty confident when I went in the ring today. He was really calm," said Ste. Croix-Laframboise. "The first half of the cross country course looks pretty fun with lots of room to gallop."

"Team Ontario had a fantastic day today. Our one star riders really held their composure and did a super job in the ring," said Team Ontario coach Jessica Phoenix. "Our top place Ontario CH-J* rider, Moira de Ste. Croix-Laframboise, is in third, and she did a super test with her horse Blue Ben."

"I just sent our two star athletes in to the dressage ring with the goal of having good, consistent, flowing tests and it worked for them. They went in the ring, stayed calm and did their job," added Phoenix. "Now they are leading the two star division and that is very exciting."
