Do Something Great with an Erie Canalway Grant
In 2017,
Rochester Accessible Adventures provided specialized equipment for kayak access to the Erie Canal and trained volunteers to accompany people with disabilities on kayak outings.
Rome Historical Society opened a new exhibition to celebrate the canal's bicentennial. The
Old Erie Canal Community Working Group launched the 4th annual
Tour the Towpath to promote cycling along the old Erie Canal in Central New York.
These are just a few of the ways that Erie Canalway Grants are helping people do great things along the canal. A new round of funding is now available and not-for-profits, municipalities, and federally recognized Native American tribes are encouraged to apply. Projects should advance the goals of the
Erie Canalway Preservation and Management Plan
.This is a competitive grant program which makes reimbursement-based awards ranging from $2,000 to $7,000. A 50/50 match is required.

Public Event Day Kicks Off WCC2017 on Sept. 24
Organizations from Albany to Buffalo, from all four branches of the NYS Canal System, NYS agencies, businesses, universities, and canal communities have come together to welcome the world to Syracuse for the
World Canals Conference, September 24-28. The world class program kicks off at the Syracuse Inner Harbor and downtown Syracuse on Sunday, September 24 with a
free Public Event Day from 1 to 6 p.m. Events include:
- Live hot glass shows presented by the Corning Museum of Glass GlassBarge
- Tours of the replica 1862 canal schooner Lois McClure
- Rowing traditional six-oar long boats built at the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum
- Musical entertainment by The Sim Redmond Band (1:00-2:45pm), The Measure (3:15-4:15pm), and Damn Dog (4:45-5:45pm).
- Kayak lessons and demonstrations
- Boat tours showcasing the cleanup of Onondaga Lake
Family-friendly activities also include exhibits from I LOVE NY and cultural and recreational organizations.
Food trucks and Taste NY specialty foods will also be available.
We know it may be hard to attend the entire conference, but don't want people to miss out on a great program. If you or someone you know is still on the fence, we encourage you to come for a day.
One day registration is open til 9/15.

Phase one of Enterprising Waters opens this weekend and
Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and its nonprofit affiliate the Erie Canalway Heritage Fund, Inc. are hosting a special preview
with guided tours, light hors d'oeuvres, music, and cash bar this Thursday night.
This event is free, however donations are always appreciated.

Sunday, September 24, E. Water Street, Syracuse
The public is invited to the official unveiling of
Canal Crossings, a series of street murals applied directly on the pavement along E. Water Street in Syracuse to celebrate the Erie Canal's significance to the city. The project is spearheaded by 40 Below's Public Arts Task Force. An additional mural is at the E. Onondaga Street in front of the Marriott Syracuse Downtown Conference Center where the World Canals Conference will take place.
Rochester Museum & Science Center, Rochester
In celebration of the city's canal heritage and t
he bicentennial of the Erie Canal, the public is invited to a grand reopening of the museum's newly restored diorama,
Rochester in 1838
. The opening is followed by the Erie Canal Bicentennial Concert performed by the Brockport Symphony Orchestra at 7:30pm in the RMSC Eisenhart Auditorium. Restoration of the diorama was funded, in part, by a grant from Erie Canalway NHC.
New Erie Canal Exhibit at Schoharie Crossing

A new indoor exhibit on the Erie Canal is coming to Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site. The State Historic Preservation Office is installing phase one and a grand opening is expected on October 7 during the fall
Path Through History Weekend. Accessible by bike, boat, and car, the park showcases the remains of the impressive Schoharie Aqueduct, locks from 1825 and 1841, and a recreated canal-side store. Visit the park and find other great sites nearby with our

The Legacy Tour continues with stops in Phoenix, Brewerton, Syracuse, Baldwinsville, and Ilion in September and visits to St. Johnsville, Halfmoon, Waterford, and Mechanicville in October. Step aboard for a free tour to discover how the "boatwood" trees, white oak and white pine, have been essential for centuries in boat building and in the forest ecosystem.
September 16, Ames Museum, Village of Ames
Usher in the fall season in the bucolic Village of Ames in the Mohawk River Valley with vendors, crafters, and re-enactors sharing their expertise to bring the rich history of this part of the Erie Canalway to life. A 5K race and tours of the museum round out the day.

DeWitt
Experience 36 miles of beautiful, off-road trail riding and explore historic communities that were built around the Erie Canal from Rome to DeWitt. Complete the ride in two days with camping or hotel accommodations at the mid-point. Or do the abbreviated one-day version.
Celebrate the harvest on the Erie Canal with local foods, craft beverage tastings, historic lock demonstrations, and live music.
