"Eruch Jessawala: Celebrating a Life
in Service of God"

Eruch Byramshaw Jessawala was born in Bombay, India on October 13th, 1916 to Gaimai and Byramshaw Jessawala. Both of Eruch's parents were passionate and devoted followers of Meher Baba, and their closeness to Baba seemingly provided entry for an early connection to be established between their eldest son and the Avatar, so that upon reaching full maturity Eruch would be emotionally prepared to take on the task that would be his life's sole calling, indeed his single-pointed focus, to serve the God-Man of the Age, Avatar Meher Baba, with a total commitment of his body and soul.

Eruch first met Meher Baba when he was 9 years old, and then twelve years later Baba asked him a fateful question: "Will you leave everything and come to be with me?" To this Eruch answered, "By your grace anything is possible."

And so it was to be. Eruch would be the closest and most relied upon companion of the God-Man during the rest of His earthly life, and indeed would spend the rest of his own life doing the work Meher Baba had arranged for him to do. While living in close proximity to and serving Avatar Meher Baba not only did Eruch act as the God-Man's main interpreter of both his alphabet board and his unique sign language, but he arranged much of his travel, looked after many of his affairs and cared for the Avatar's health and physical well-being. To do this Eruch frequently pushed himself to unimaginable extremes; often going days without sleep, subsisting on minimal amounts of food and depriving himself of almost all the comforts that a stable and predictable professional life would have provided him.  Of course Eruch also accompanied Meher Baba on "The New Life," and here the hardships he and the other mandali endured were the stuff of legend.

In the mid-50's Eruch took down dictation on the opening of what would become Meher Baba's magnum opus, God Speaks. He also composed parts of the book himself though the entire project was overseen and supervised by Baba.

After Meher Baba dropped His physical body in 1969 Eruch continued to live at Meherazad and he assisted Baba's sister Mani with the affairs of the Trust. In addition Eruch was a mainstay at the mandali hall talks for pilgrims and was beloved for his storytelling ability and the way he brought Baba to life for many pilgrims who had never had the opportunity to have Beloved Baba's darshan. Eruch was also known for the way he lovingly welcomed and embraced all pilgrims to India from all parts of the globe. Once when asked by an American pilgrim why he hugged everyone who came to Meherabad/Meherazad he stated that this was his opportunity to embrace Baba (the God) in each and every one of these people, and he did not want to miss the opportunity to embrace Baba.

This Sunday will be an opportunity for us to embrace Baba through the acknowledgement and honoring of perhaps His greatest servant, Eruch Jessawala. If selfless servitude and absolute obedience are the measures of one's love for God, then Eruch was indeed a great lover of God.

Come join us this Sunday and share your memories of or experiences with the special soul who was Eruch. You may also simply soak in the recollections and reflections of others in this community remembrance.

We look forward to seeing you!
