BALD EAGLE MAKES NATIONAL NEWS
This majestic eagle captured national attention when it was recently seen on the Esplanade.
On January 11, the Esplanade Association's Horticulture Manager, Renee Portanova, was in the Park removing debris from a winter storm when a bald eagle swooped in front of her work vehicle. She immediately stopped, and was able to capture an incredible photo of the eagle (pictured left).

This remarkable sighting made national news. Read about Renee's experience, and the significance for the Esplanade, in the Boston Globe and US News & World Report

A YEAR OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Read our "Year in Review" blog post to learn all the ways we were able to make a difference on the Esplanade in 2017.
2017 was an amazing year for the Charles River Esplanade, as well as the Esplanade Association! With your support, we continued to grow our capacity to revitalize and enhance the Esplanade, preserve natural green space, and  build community  in the Park.

Accomplishments included:  $42,000 raised to turn an unwelcoming part of the Park into a vibrant art mural,  7,800 gallons of compost tea used to increase biodiversity in the soil, and  1,610 volunteers making a difference on the Esplanade!  Read more in our 2017 Year in Review Blog Post .
SAY "BEE MINE?" THIS VALENTINE'S DAY!
Your gift of pollinator plants this Valentine's Day can help create more habitat for native bees!
Looking for a special gift for that special someone this Valentine's Day? Say "Bee Mine?" by sponsoring pollinator-friendly plants!

Populations of native bees, and other pollinators like butterflies, moths, and humming birds are declining around the world due to loss of habitat. Your gift will help the Esplanade Association plant  species that provide essential habitats for these pollinators.

For your donation, you or the person(s) you are honoring will receive a beautiful e-card from the Esplanade Association on February 14 describing your gift.  Say "Bee Mine?" today!

HORTICULTURE HAPPENINGS
Did you know that day-to-day maintenance of the Park is 100%  organic ? The Esplanade is one of only two public parks in Boston that's managed without the use of pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, or other unsustainable practices.

How is that possible? Our two full-time field staff use the following organic practices:
  • Removing weeds by hand
  • Using a small blow torch to burn persistent weeds along concrete
  • Composting vegetative debris for reuse in the Park
  • Applying compost tea to keep the soil's 'food web' healthy
  • Planting the 'right plants in the right place'; often this means plants that are native to this region, so that they are naturally predisposed to survive on the Esplanade
  • Analyzing and interpreting soil tests in order to make adjustments to meet soil needs
A 300 gallon spray tank allows field staff to spread organic compost tea throughout the Esplanade.
VOLUNTEERS IN THE PARK
The Esplanade Association encourages Boston area organizations and businesses to gather their employees and join us for a volunteer day in the Park. A group volunteer day is a great way to build a sense of camaraderie and teamwork while also promoting Park stewardship and giving back to the local community.

If you're interested in scheduling a volunteer event on the Esplanade for your company or group in 2018, please email Micah Jasny at mjasny@esplanadeassociation.org

We welcome organizations of all types and sizes to join us on the Esplanade for a fun and rewarding day of service!
