Essentially YoursMarch 2013

Greetings!

Marty Harger, doTERRA Diamond, owns Balance Wellness Center

Everyone loves a great story. Like me, you may recall storytelling hour at the library, where you'd listen intently as the librarian read of grand adventures from exotic places and people. My strongest memories are of my grandfather telling us bedtime stories of his childhood antics with his brothers back in Ohio. Stories are one of the primary ways we share information and life experiences.

Take a moment and think about some of your childhood stories. It's likely you can picture the story in your mind, because a great story doesn't just TELL what happened, it paints a picture that truly leaves an imprint in our memory.

In this issue of Essentially Yours, we're going to focus on the concept of oral history or story telling. It's an important point, because the natural healing power of plants have historically been taught and shared by one person describing to another what remedy might be best and why. It's a form of education, which is one of the five core missions of doTERRA for us to introduce these gifts-of-the-earth to others.

We welcome those of you new to doTERRA and essential oils to our monthly newsletter. This month we share stories that help describe and explain the diverse health effects (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual) that essential oils offer. We hope you will take some time to share your experiences and stories with us so we can help teach each other more about the oils. Take a look at our fun CONTEST and enter as many times as you'd like. Remember to share your story with others - it's how we learn best!

Essentially yours,

Marty Harger

Schedule a Weekly "Momentum" Call
Weekly MOMENTUM Calls Make a Difference!

Accountability. It's a big word that sometimes scares people. But when YOU set the goals and the activities you plan to do this week, it can help to have a friend on the other end of the phone to listen, give feedback and suggest next steps to keep you on track to your dreams.

Enter the Momentum Call. Most upline team leaders offer these weekly 15-30 minute calls to anyone in their downline who is committed to building a doTERRA team. Your job is to schedule the Momentum Call with your upline leader, call them on time, be respectful of the time frame by being prepared with "first things first," do what you say you're going to do, and ask for their help when things start to slip or you need new ideas. The upline partner's job is to be present and available at the scheduled time, to listen, reflect back, ask you why something worked out or didn't, and help you steer yourself toward greater success.

What to Do When Someone Says

"Snake Oil!"

doTERRA Essential oils are a gift of the earth!

Essential oils fly in the face of what many have been raised with in our country, and what they believe to be true. If you come across someone who is a disbeliever - they MAY be open to scientific research such as that provided by doTERRA or posted on www.pubmed.gov, or will listen to a third party (like an upline friend) who has a bit more experience with the oils.

If not - ask if they are open to try some of the more mainstream doTERRA product options as these will help them too!   Here are a few products we'd suggest you might try introducing to those you know and love who seem hesitant about the oils themselves. Remember - each of these fine products contain the Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade of essential oils that WILL help their health...so you are offering them a solid health improvement with doTERRA!

Deep Blue Rub for pain relief

OnGuard Foaming Hand Wash as a natural and nice-smelling antimicrobial soap

OnGuard Toothpaste for whiter and healthier gums and smiles

Public Speaking: The Ultimate in Story Telling
Sharon Desjarlais and Michelle McGrew
Here are some suggestions we've summarized from an article called "3 Tips to Confidently Speak to a Live Audience" by Sharon Desjarlais and Michele McGrew, marketing and life coaches for wellness practitioners.

Public speaking terrifies some people. The key (besides liberally applying the Balance blend) is to keep practicing - because like anything in life," Practice makes perfect."

Public speaking can mean talking to a small group upwards to an auditorium of people. There are many ways to learn to become more comfortable telling your doTERRA story to others, including joining a local chapter of Toastmasters International.

Bettina Moench Team leader Bettina Moench is a former Toastmasters International member who won a local championship for one of her speeches. She's a master storyteller, and offers these suggestions. "Speak from the heart about what you know...your passion and sincerity will come through, and your audience will trust what you're saying.  If you're sharing a personal health story about doTERRA, keep it short and relevant...don't give a long medical history.  That just weighs down the impact your story can have. Your goal is to inspire people to positive change!"

Tip #1: Meet Your Clients Where They Need You Most

When you plan your talk around a topic that solves a big problem your audience is struggling with, you shift the focus of your presentation from your discomfort to their healing potential.  So before you plan your talk, start by asking yourself, "What's the biggest problem or challenge my dream client wants solved?"  Don't just assume you know.  Instead, take a minute to imagine that you're following this person around for a day.  Notice what they're struggling with. What's causing them pain? And how is that impacting the rest of their lives?  Then ask yourself, "What tips can I share to help this person take the first steps toward healing this situation?"

Tip #2: Tap Into Your Passion and Talk About What You LOVE
There's an alchemy that happens when you combine what your audience needs with what you love sharing.  When you're speaking on a topic you're passionate about, your enthusiasm pulls you past your fears...and straight into your purpose. And when your love for your work shows, you convey a sense of inner confidence that's very attractive to new people.  So tap into that deep well of healing and wisdom you've been drawing from for lifetimes.  And joyfully share your gifts with a world that's ready to receive them.

Tip #3: Make Peace With Imperfection
So don't worry about getting everything right.  Instead, focus on your message. And trust that the people you're sharing it with will get exactly what they need.  Even when your delivery isn't perfect, what people remember is how they feel in your energy.  That's the kind of heartfelt connection that encourages your dream client to take the next step toward their healing with you.

Concussion Essential Oil Protocol
Provided by doTERRA Cross-line Diamond team leader Tamalu Watkins

Concussion

Unfortunately, concussions (traumatic brain injury) are becoming more common, whether due to car accidents cars, work injury, sports trauma or from anything that creates a sudden direct blow or bump to the head.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, as many as 3.8 million sports- and recreation-related concussions occur each year in the U.S.

Here's what happens in a concussion. The brain is made of soft tissue. It's cushioned by spinal fluid and encased in the protective shell of the skull. When you sustain a concussion, the impact can jolt your brain. Sometimes, it literally causes your brain to move around in your head. Traumatic brain injuries can cause bruising, damage to the blood vessels and injury to the nerves. The result? Your brain doesn't function normally. If you've suffered a concussion, vision may be disturbed, you may lose equilibrium or you may fall unconscious. In short, the brain is confused. To read more about concussions, click  here.

When a team member needed some recommendations to address a concussion, knowledgeable oils user Tamalu Watkins shared a protocol of doTERRA oils application she has successfully used many times. As we share her story and experiences with you, take a look at her suggestions in the attached file you can DOWNLOAD HERE.

Blogs Spread the Word, Fast!
Online storytelling is everywhere

Blogs get the word outIn the past few years, as technology has spread to all parts of the globe and the era of the "voyeur" has emerged front-and-center, more and more people are sharing their stories and life experiences with one another via programs such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Pintrest, Twitter and more. A blog, however, is a type of website that an author (you, if you choose) creates on a regular basis to publish information or thoughts or photos or ideas where readers can leave comments and the author can link to related information or other online locations of interest.

I like this description of blogs, which came into being in 1999: "A blog is a personal diary. A daily pulpit. A collaborative space. A political soapbox. A breaking-news outlet. A collection of links. Your own private thoughts. Memos to the world. Your blog is whatever you want it to be. There are millions of them, in all shapes and sizes, and there are no real rules."

doTERRA has a great blog (http://doterrablog.com) with regular postings and ideas you can use.  Several of our team leaders have begun sharing their oils stories and experiences with their own blogs. Take a look at the successful approaches they use to share information about essential oils with current doTERRA oils fans and new readers who may be interested in getting their own!

Do you have a blog we can share and learn more? Email marty@balance245.com and let's share it in our newsletter next month. It's a great storytelling tool for those who are committed to regular postings.

Win a Ticket to the 2014 doTERRA Convention -- Just Send Us Your Story!

doTERRA Convention 2012 As noted earlier in this issue, sharing our stories is how we learn. Each month we publish some of YOUR personal stories and experiences so we ALL can learn. When you tell me about a health condition you've had (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, financial) and what you did to shift that condition that worked, I listen! Maybe you got over a skin rash. Maybe you were able to earn enough to pay off some debt.  Or you tended to your family dog. Whatever your story...we all want to listen. So now it's your turn.

IF YOU'D LIKE TO WIN A FREE TICKET TO THE 2014 doTERRA Convention - an amazingly fantastic 3-days of learning and new products and motivation and FUN, October 2-3-4 in Salt Lake City, Utah...then email your story entries to marty@balance245.com. Here are the rules:

Here's a great chance to renew your membership without the fee, that will allow you that 25% savings on all the oils and products you want to use for your family's health.   It's a slightly different procedure than we've known in the past - so we asked for clarification from Account Manager Jill Cook, who offered this insight for us:

Just call the person who enrolled you or doTERRA at 800-411-8151 and let them know you'd like to reactivate your account. After a few questions are answered, they will take your order, and the Membership Reactivation fee will be added on to a future order a year (in the same month) from when you last paid your membership fee. Using CORIANDER and CILANTRO to Detoxify Your Body This Spring

As the seasons change, many natural health advocates encourage us to cleanse and detoxify our bodies.  According to Brenda Watson, Naturopathic Doctor and Colonic Therapist and one of the foremost authorities in North America on natural digestive support, detoxification and internal cleansing, detoxification is a natural function of the body, which involves what she calls the seven channels of elimination. These channels are the liver, lungs, lymphatic system, kidneys, blood, skin, and the bowel or colon. (Read more...)

doTERRA offers many products focused on cleansing and detoxification, including the Zendocrine oil blend and capsules, as well as GX Assist and Terrazyme. But in this issue of Essentially Yours we're going to focus on two essential oils you'll want to have in your collection and incorporate into your health: Coriander and Cilantro.

doTERRA's Coriander and Cilantro essential oils are the perfect spring-season compliment to assist detoxification. Both come from the Cilantro plant... Coriander from the fruit or seeds, and Cilantro from its green leaves. Although from the same plant, each part of the plant offers a different chemical profile that provides unique health benefits.

Coriander oil comes from the fruit of the plant CORIANDER

Coriander is a wonderful oil for muscle pain and spasms as well as conditions of the nerves. It acts as an aromatic stimulant and has historical use as an aphrodisiac. It is a good digestive tonic, relieving nausea and flatulence!   "Traditionally classified as a Herb of Protection and of Immortality, coriander...imbues a feeling of security, peace and earthy permanence," according to Gabriel Mojay in his book Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit.

doTERRA introduced Coriander in the fall of 2009 to the oils collection. Dr. Hill shared these insights with the audience at the annual convention: "For more than 5,000 years, the seeds of the Cilantro plant have been distilled to create Coriander - a strong antispasmodic for the digestive tract. Coriander offers a fresh, herb scent and is similar to the smell of Cilantro - which is distilled from leaves. The Coriander dōTERRA has secured was specifically selected because its primary constituent is Linalool...a powerful, natural compound that has been shown to help reverse Type II Diabetes when combined with healthy lifestyle changes. Linalool enables the pancreas to perform in a normal manner by increasing the output and production of insulin. It is the increased sugar in our system that creates diabetic health effects. Linalool helps the pancreas to HEAL vs create more insulin. It restores the chemical structures and normal body activity and chemistry models. Coriander taken internally assists our bodies to normalize insulin production." Dr. Hill cited research now underway at several leading universities that are studying the effects of Linalool to reverse Type II Diabetes, including Harvard, Georgetown and BYU.

CILANTRO

Cilantro oil comes from the plant's leaves dōTERRA's Cilantro is steam distilled from Coriandrum sativum, the same species of plant from which dōTERRA's Coriander essential oil is distilled. Cilantro is sometimes referred to as Chinese Parsley in botanical reference guides. It's composition is significant and different enough to have both in the collection. When used topically, cilantro essential oil has analgesic properties and can be used for its antimicrobial activity. doTERRA's Cilantro can also be used internally for digestive support. Cilantro is a natural chelator (binder) of toxic metals such as lead, aluminum and mercury.

According to an article published on www.livestrong.com, "You may use cilantro to flavor your salsa or shrimp, but you may not know that it has potential health benefits. It can potentially help to remove, or chelate, heavy metals from your body. You are exposed to toxins every day; in the air, in water and in chemical cleaners. Over time, these metals can accumulate and may disrupt the natural flow of your body's systems.

Cilantro oil from doTERRA Cilantro and Lead

An article by M. Aga, et al, published in the "Journal of Ethnopharmacology" in October of 2001, investigated the effects of cilantro on mice with high levels of lead in their bodies. Another chelating agent, DMSA, was used as a control to validate the results of the experiment. After 25 days levels of lead were significantly decreased by the cilantro, suggesting that cilantro has lead suppressive activities.

Cilantro and Mercury

In a study conducted by Y. Omura and S. L. Beckman of the Heart Disease Research Foundation of New York and published in "Acupuncture and Electrotherapy Research" in August of 1995, the researchers found that cilantro accelerated the excretion of lead, mercury and aluminum from the human body through the urine.Read more...

Dr. Susan Lawton whose wonderful weekly oils reviews are posted on www.builddoterra.com, offers these Cilantro-based remedies you'll want to try:

  • Cilantro Happy Liver Tonic: Cilantro 3 drops, Bergamot 2 drops, Frankincense 3 drops, Cypress 4 drops, Marjoram 2 drops, Patchouli 2 drops. Blend and rub on the bottoms of feet and on the liver (right side under the rib cage) each evening for 2 weeks; also peps up the pancreas and the gall bladder.
  • Thigh Lymphatic Rub: Coconut Oil 3 tablespoons, Cilantro 3 drops, Patchouli 2 drops, Cypress 4 drops, Lime 3 drops, White Fir 3 drops, Rosemary 2 drops; gently rub from the knee up to beyond the waistline on the outside of the legs - up the center of the thigh on the outside of the leg. Do this for three days and nights to relieve edema or swelling of legs or feet during hot humid weather.

"Sharing the Oils" vs "Selling the Oils"

Share the oils! People have to experience doTERRA essential oils to understand their power. That's why when introducing doTERRA to others, we offer samples and ask people to apply the oils and products in our presence. You do NOT have to "sell" anything with doTERRA -- nearly everyone loves the scent of crisp Peppermint or the snappy smell of Lemon.

So if we SHARE the oils and our EXPERIENCES (stories) with enough people, those who are ready to move toward a natural approach will say "yes"... no selling required!

So be generous with your oils if you want others to try them. Teach them the value of the oils and how to use them appropriately. That's what we do with natural plant medicines...we teach each other with our stories and experiences. It can be as simple as: I drip the oil on you. They work and you like them. You decide if you want to get your own. You use them, they work, you are now doing something GREAT for your health, your body, your wallet, and the planet! Smart choice!

What's Your Essential Oil Sign?

Explore the connection between astrology & doTERRA

Aries is the sign of the Ram
ARIES: March 21 - April 20

This year we started a series found on a website by Jan Randall, a British aromatherapist who relocated to the south of France. On her

www.your-aromatherapy-guide.com she features interesting insights about essential oils most appropriate to those born under each astrological sign. We thought it might be a fun resource for you to investigate. This month we discuss Aries.

Aries are natural leaders being go-getters, courageous, ambitious, confident, enthusiastic and good organizers!   They are also passionate, fiery, frank, exciting, energetic, curious and always competitive. They prefer to lead rather than be led, are impatient if quick results aren't seen, and can become bored and move on. Sometimes an Aries can be quick-tempered, impulsive and argumentative.

Health issues: The head, brain and eyes are ruled by Aries. They don't fall ill very easily and tend to fight ailments off quickly. Danger of headaches and stress-related problems.

Essential oils:

  • Black pepper, frankincense, lemon and rosemary help support their health and fiery nature.
  • Peppermint, rose and marjoram are excellent for calming the fire
  • Chamomile, lavender and peppermint are useful for soothing headaches. Give a gift of essential oils to your Aries birthday friends this month!

Essential Oil Stories
Each month we ask our readers to share their experiences with dōTERRA Essential Oils. We all learn when we share, so read on...

Nodule Reduction with Essential Oils

After having my baby one and a half years ago, I was diagnosed with a thyroid nodule approximately 0.8cm by 0.8cm. At that time, a biopsy was not needed and I was told to watch the nodule. Over the period of the next year-and-a-half the nodule grew rapidly. So rapidly that I made a follow-up appointment and quickly was sent in for an ultrasound. The nodule had doubled in size! I was referred to an endocrinologist and a biopsy was recommended.  I work in the medical field as a Family Nurse Practitioner, but I believe that holistic and traditional medicine should be incorporated hand-in-hand and patients can get the best outcomes by doing so.

I decided to give myself one month to try and shrink my nodule before my appointment with the endocrinologist. I started to do research on oils and started to apply Myrrh and Frankincense to my thyroid area on my neck and the thyroid point on my hands. I immediately noticed a difference. I also started the dōTERRA Lifelong Wellness Pack and took these vitamins and supplements daily. I went in for my appointment with the endocrinologist a month after starting the regimen and the nodule had shrunk back to almost its original size in one month. I still went ahead with the biopsy and the results came back benign. I still use the dōTERRA oils and the nodule is still continuing to shrink. I plan to follow up with my endocrinologist in 6 months. To me, this is a perfect example of what I promote for my patients -- using all available medical knowledge and research together to create the best outcomes.   --- Lauren M, Salt Lake City, UT

Lemon essential oil from doTERRA Cleaning Up the Sticky Stuff

Last summer my 7-year-old daughter and her friend were playing and decided to tape peacock feathers to our banister to block out the west-facing sun coming in through the windows. We thought it looked cute, and so for the next few days we left the feathers taped up for her to enjoy. When I went to remove them, I noticed the tape holding the feathers had practically baked itself on to the banister. So, the tape stayed there all last summer. It stayed on through the winter too, and so this summer I decided to try and get that tape off the banister. Out came the Lemon oil. I put it on a cloth and wiped over the now-baked-on-tape....and within a swipe or two, all traces of that tape were gone! I was happy to find yet another great new use of doTERRA's Lemon oil.

Keep the Cold & Flu from Returning

One way of re-infecting yourself after a cold or flu is to use your toothbrush, which is full of the germs you just battled!  Ideally you should toss your toothbrush after an illness and get a new one.  But that's not always practical or economical, especially if you use an electric toothbrush, where replacement brushes are pricey.  Keep your toothbrush healthy by rinsing it in a glass of water infused with a drop of dōTERRA On Guard.  It helps kill germs and leaves the toothbrush tasting cinnamony fresh! ---Bettina M, Ft. Lauderdale, FL
