Message from the Rabbi
Parshat Chayei Sarah
This past Tuesday most of the local schools had an off day. It was a cold, rainy and miserable day, so everyone pretty much stayed inside all day. At one point, we decided to get nostalgic by pulling out some old movies we had not seen in some time. We found the DVD's (yes, we still have those) and decided to watch a Pixar classic called "Up." If you have not seen this movie, I highly recommend it as it is far more than a children's Disney animated film. "Up" covers life, death, love, adjustment, disappointment, living your dreams and the need to move on and help others in order to help yourself. In my opinion, the first few minutes of the film contain one of the most moving, sad and meaningful clips I have ever seen, and all without a single word being spoken!

When Avraham loses his beloved Sarah Imeinu, he also has to come to grips with what his life means without her. The Torah tells us that he came to eulogize her and cry for her. Rav Soloveitchik ZT"L explained that while normally people cry first then collect themselves to eulogize their loved one, here the order is reversed. Avraham could deal with her loss because that was the will of Hashem. However, when he eulogized her, he realized that without her he was not Avraham Avinu. This explains why we hear very little of Avraham's life post Sarah, even though he lived for quite some time.

We must appreciate who we have become in life not only because of all our hard work, but also because of those who got us there.
