Everyone loves Chanukah.

I don't think that is such a reach to say that. The question is why do people love Chanukah so much? Why is it that people who may observe little else during the course of the year, will celebrate Chanukah in one way or another. (The same can be said for Pesach). Why is it that people who sometimes go out of their way to conceal their Judaism become very proud Jews during these eight days?

One obvious reason for Chanukah's popularity is its placement on the calendar. I often wonder if it would still be so observed had it fallen in July. Who knows?

Then there is the rationale that this is an "Easy" holiday with few restrictions and only "Fun" things to do. That also makes sense, but there has to be more.

In all honesty I believe that the Jewish soul - the Neshama - craves authenticity and light. Chanukah is a time when we all have the opportunity to illuminate a very dark world that engulfs us and suppresses our ability to be truly spiritual. When that first candle is lit, it is as if a window to the soul is blown wide open and all that was cooped up inside is let out.

The hope is that this feeling can endure and last beyond these magical eight days.
