Message from the Rabbi
Parshat Vayera
There is almost too much going on in the Parsha of Vayera. The Parsha begins with the visit of three Malachim and concludes with what most believe to be the tenth and final test for Avraham Avinu - the Akeidah. In between, Avraham pleads on behalf of Sodom which is ultimately destroyed, Lot and (most of) his family escape, and Hagar and Yishmael are banished (again) after the birth of Yitzchak.

While one could spend a great deal of time learning and analyzing each particular episode, we also take a macro view at the tumultuous life of this Covenantal family. It seems that nothing comes easily for anyone who does Hashem's bidding. And once we finally have a moment's peace with relative calm, the next great challenge arises.

This is what Chazal meant when they taught "Ma'aseh Avot Siman Labanim." Indeed, the actions of our Matriarchs and Patriarchs were blueprints to our very existence as a people.
