Rabbi's Message
Parshat Vayishlach
Reconciliation. That is a tough word. It is an even tougher task. When feelings are hurt, and pain has been inflicted, it is impossible to undo, no matter how many apologies are offered and how many handshakes and hugs take place.

After years of anger and separation Yaakov and Esav finally meet again. The Torah sets the table for a very tense meeting (or showdown) as Yaakov prepares to divide and conquer. By the time the meeting has ended, the tension is let out and we can breathe easily. However, we are not left with a warm and fuzzy feeling that everything is OK between the two brothers. The Torah tells us that each brother goes his separate way instead of going to one place together.

It is meaningful when two aggrieved parties can come to some sort of understanding, but it is much more difficult to remove past pain and hurt feelings. We should try not to get into these situations to begin with.
