Parshat Zachor
|
This Shabbat takes its special name from the additional Torah portion that is read on Shabbat morning.
The reading of Zachor - remembering what Amalek did to our people as they left Egypt - is a biblical obligation that applies to us all. This is the only reading that is considered "M'Deoraita."
We will have a second reading of Zachor at the conclusion of services so that we can accomodate everyone to be able to fulfill this Mitzvah.

Matanot L'Evyonim
|
One of the Mitzvot of Purim is to give money to those in need on the actual day of Purim.
As always, I will be facilitating the performance of this most important Mitzvah for the community.
Please give your funds to me by this Sunday, Purim Day, and I will take care of the rest.
Monies will be distributed on Purim both here and in Israel. You can make checks payable to "Etz Chaim Benevolent Fund" or to "Yad Eliezer."
Thank you and Tizku L'Mitzvot.

Parshat Tetzaveh

Israel Baseball? Really?
Unless you have been living under a rock, you have been swept up in the groundswell of support for the the Israeli National Baseball team who are currently demolishing their opponents in the World Baseball Classic. They have already secured their berth to play in the next round in Tokyo by going 3-0 in the group stage of the competition. The team was ranked 38th in the world heading into the
tournament. Everyone seems to be taken by this Cinderella story team with its quirky Jewish mascot and its unlikely success.
Or maybe it is watching a bunch of rugged baseball players all putting on Kippot while the Hatikvah was played after their victory. This team has feel-good written all over it.
Who knows what will happen in the next round (it may be over by the time you read this) as they may have to face more formidable opponents like Japan or Cuba.
Unlikely? Yes. Unbelievable? well, normally I would say yes, but during this time of year, anything can happen. Chazal teach us that the month of Adar is a good time for our people. We believe that a certain amount of "Luck" or good fortune or Mazal is readily available for us to take advantage of during this month. After all, it was the unlikely victory over Haman and his evil decrees that took place during this time. It is Purim so anything can happen.
So while we enjoy this wonderful Purim holiday which is meant to bring Jews closer to one another through its various Mitzvot and observances, this year we have one more way through which we can bond and feel pride in belonging to the Jewish people and the State of Israel.
