Your Community Brief from Evans High School

Thank you for your commitment to making Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement." Our focus is on Literacy, Rigor, and Relationships and our school's pillars of Pride, Determination, and Perseverance continue to be on display by our students, staff and community.
The Florida Department of Education released the 2017/18 school scores and grades for all
2018 statewide assessments and we are pleased to share that
every tested area has increased from last school year. Net result -
Evans increased 64 points representing an increase in our school grade! This reflects very well on the hard work our students put forth, the tireless dedication and commitment of the EHS faculty, specifically our teachers and support from our families. Go Trojans!
As the summer months help us re-charge, I'd like to recap an amazing year at Evans High. We saw achievement gains in all areas. Here are a few talking points I'd like for you to share with our community members. At Evans this year the following occurred in academics:
- 37 point increase in Math categories
- 11 point increase in ELA/reading categories
- 10 point increase in Science EOC
- 7% graduation rate increase over the past year = 91%
- 7 point increase in Acceleration
- 3 point increase in U.S. History
- Over $17.2 million in scholarships earned by the 2018 graduating class
Start of the 2018/19 school year
Three weeks from July 23rd, the first bell will ring at 7:20 a.m. to kick off the start of the 2018/19 school year (Monday, August 13th). We have a new bell schedule for this year. The end of our academic day is now 2:20 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesday's end time is 1:10pm. For the full bell schedule, please see below.
Remember that the entire 2018/19 OCPS school year calendar is available online. You can also find a printable PDF for the fridge or bulletin board. The most important date for students to keep in mind: Monday, August 13th, the 1st day of school.

Virtual Library Cards
The Orange County Library System partnered with the Orange County School District (August 2017) to provide ALL students with an Online/Virtual Library card. Please note that students are required to sign into their virtual accounts using the same information as they would at school (Student ID and PIN (birthdate: YYYYMMDD).
Please understand that though all Orange County school district students have a virtual library card, they may not have a standard library card. The standard library card is needed to use any of our public library equipment (i.e. Computers) If students do not have a standard card, but need to access the databases, they are allowed to bring in their own devices
into any OCLS branch, connect to the open Wi-Fi and sign on to the databases using their virtual card information.
The Virtual Library Card databases can be accessed from anywhere as long as they have an internet connection.
Below are two helpful links that will direct you to the virtual card website.

1. Visit

a. Scroll to the bottom of the home page and look for the search bar in the lower right hand corner.
b. In the search bar enter the words "Virtual Card" and click the magnifying glass to initiate the search.
c. You will be directed to another search page where "Virtual Card" is listed as the first link.
On the virtual card home page, you will find more information on login-instructions, as well as, on the card itself. Browse all categories/links when you have time; there is a lot of valuable information!
Locate the link "Access information to help you study" on the virtual card's home page.
This link will direct you to a number of resources that will be beneficial to students this upcoming school year.
The most popular one on this list is "Brainfuse." This database allows qualified online tutors to assist students with needed homework help or test reviews. There are also programs available to help strengthen knowledge on a specific subject. Once again, this service is FREE to all Orange County Virtual Card holders.

#DigitalME Device Checkout Dates
For students who need to checkout a device for the 2018-2019 school year, the following dates and times will be available for specific grades to complete the process. Students who kept their devices for the summer just need to ensure that their devices are fully charged for the first day of school on August 13th.
Friday, August 3rd: 9th grade students are invited to the media center for device checkout and ID's from 8:00 am - 11 am and 12:00-3:00pm.
Wednesday, August 8th: 10th-12th students who are new to Evans are invited to the media center to check out their devices as well as pick up their schedules and walk the campus.
Saturday, August 11th: ALL grades may checkout their devices from the media center.
* Parents and students, please make sure that you have a laptop that is functioning to ensure you're set up for success prior to the first day of school.

Freshman Orientation Night
Thursday, August 9th
Freshmen are welcomed to the Evans High School campus from 6:00-7:30 pm on August 9th to pick up their schedules and tour the campus in order to visit their classrooms and meet their teachers. We will begin our program in the Performing Arts Center (PAC). We look forward to seeing the Class of 2022 on campus!

Dress Code
The dress and appearance of Evans High School students contribute to the health and safety of the individual, promotes a positive educational environment, and will not disrupt the educational activities and processes.
In accordance with Orange County Public School policy, clothes shall be worn as they are designed - suspenders over the shoulders, pants secured at the waist, belts buckled, etc. Although not all inclusive, some highlights of the Code of Student Conduct are listed below.
1. Bare midriffs and bare sides shall not show.
2. Clothing that is too tight or revealing is unacceptable.(ex. Leggings, spandex)
3. Garments and/or jewelry that display or suggest sexual, vulgar, drug, alcohol or tobacco related wording/ graphics, or that may tend to provoke violence or disruption in school, shall not be worn. Clothing should not display offensive pictures, words, or phrases.
4. Gang paraphernalia, jewelry, tattoos, or other insignias that display, suggest, provoke, or may tend to provoke violence or disruptions are not allowed.
5. The following items are prohibited:
~ Any headgear such as, but not limited to, hats, caps, do-rags, visors, sunglasses, sweatbands, or bandanas.
~ Pajamas, slippers, or boxers.
6. Hemlines of shorts, dresses and skirts shall be no shorter than mid-thigh, regardless of legwear.
7. No rips, tears, holes, torn or tattered clothes are not permitted at any time.
8. Shoes shall be worn at all times. No bedroom slippers and/or cleats are permitted.
9. Shoulders must be covered and garments must have sleeves. Garments worn under see through material must meet dress code requirements.
Please ensure that you adhere to the dress code policy to maximize time spent in the classroom receiving instruction.

Morehouse College Math and Science Program
Check out this very special trip that some of our very special Trojans got to participate in with Morehouse! In the words of

Morehouse College, who hosted our terrific Trojan group along with Jones students . . .
"I am happy to report that the 41 students from Evans and Jones High Schools have returned to Orlando safely. By all accounts, everyone had a great experience. From my perspective, this group was certainly one of the best we've had. This is without a doubt a reflection of your leadership. I thank you for your willing partnership. I also would like to extend gratitude to Ms. Claribel Rodriguez, Mr. Berthony Louis Mr. Keith Hadley and Mr. Roderick Davenport for their service and support through the recruitment process and during the program. They are tremendous assets to both your schools and our program." We are excited about continuing and strengthening our partnership as we start preparing for the 2019 summer experience. Two of our Trojan students participated in the FBA Nine Star Honor Band in St. Petersburg. They rehearsed for 2 days then performed for the FBA Summer Conference for a group of dedicated Performing Arts Educators from the Florida Bandmaster's Association.

Guidance Corner
It is with pleasure to welcome you to Maynard Evans High School. Whether you are returning to our school or you are completely new, we look forward to a productive 2018-2019 school year. I believe that it is important to share with the Evans family who we are, what we do, and our role in helping students. I hope that this newsletter will be a valuable mode of communication between families and the school, particularly as it relates to guidance and the well-being of students.
It is the mission of the guidance department to promote developmentally appropriate social, emotional, academic, and career growth for all students. Every counselor and support person is committed to helping promote a positive culture and to establishing an environment for optimal learning while delivering a high quality, comprehensive school counseling program to all students. We strive to provide services that are centered on individual uniqueness and personalization.
Beginning Monday, July 30th, Student Services is open to serve you and your student:
* Student Services hours: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
* Enrollments and withdrawals: 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Criteria for Schedule Changes:
Schedule changes will occur during device check out as well as during the first week of school if students' schedules meet the following criteria:
* A course was previously passed
* Student currently enrolled in or finished class on Florida Virtual School
* A course is needed for graduation
* The student has failed the prerequisite
* Previously failed with the teacher
* Duplicate course on schedule
* All other changes are administrative
** Counselors will verify the above reasons.
Schedules will NOT be changed:
* To change teachers, periods, lunch shifts, or electives
All other schedule changes must be approved by an administrator. Administrators and counselors will be available during all device checkout dates.

General Senior cap and gown and yearbook photos will take place at Evans High School on August 24, 2018. No appointment necessary. Students will take photos during their scheduled English class on that day.

Motivational Moment
THE WAY TO THE TOP
A group of high school students and their chaperones were visiting the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. over their spring break. As they arrived, they heard a guide announce, "Ladies and gentlemen, there is currently a two-hour wait to ride the elevator to the top of the monument." The guide then paused a moment, smiled, and added, "However, there is
no wait should you desire to take the stairs."
This story reveals something about success. In truth, there are no elevators to the top. If you want to make it there, you've got to take a long series of steps. How many steps you're willing to take - and how long you're willing to keep climbing - determines how high you will go.
