Maynard Evans High School Community Brief
Monday, July 26, 2021
Evans Community Member,

Thank you for your commitment to making Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement." Our focus is on Literacy, Rigor, and Relationships, and our school's pillars of Pride, Determination, and Perseverance continue to be on display by our students, staff and community.

We are now only about two weeks from returning to school. Students, please take some time and think about your academic goals for this coming year. This is a reflection not just for you but also for all Evans staff as we look to ensure positive student outcomes for all students.

In an effort to keep you updated on current happenings, please be aware of the numerous ways we communicate with our students, parents and community members. Communication to students will be ongoing via their individual student Gmail accounts and their OCPS canvas platform, our Evans High twitter, and our school website at evanshs.ocps.net. Furthermore, you can also visit the OCPS website.

You may have noticed that tentative schedules are available for some students in Skyward at this time. However, we are currently not done with the scheduling process, and it is unlikely that the schedule you see today will remain the same by the time school begins in August. We will send additional communication when schedules are completed for the school and Skyward is reflecting accurate information.

Report cards were issued on July 13. We anticipate receiving the state End-of-Course Exam scores from the Florida Department of Education around July 31. An updated report card will be issued once the district receives the scores. As a reminder, a state End-of-Course Exam will not impact a final course grade, unless it improves the grade. Report cards can be viewed using Skyward Family Access, which is under Quick Links on the OCPS home page.

Remember that the entire 2021/22 OCPS school year calendar is available online. The most important date for students to keep in mind: Tuesday, August 10, the 1st day of school for students. See the full calendar here. Please remember to visit our website and the OCPS website all along for the latest news updates.

7) Borrowing for College vs. Annual Income after College
Source: The Wall Street Journal "Is a Graduate Degree Worth the Debt? Check It Here" (July 15, 2021)
Taking on college student loans should be done with caution. Students graduating college with their bachelor's degree should take care that depending on their college major, that they have not assumed too much debt which can hamper future plans such as getting married, buying a house, etc. Evans College and Career Resource Center is always ready to help students with their college financial plans.
Making sense of the chart: The chart compares the average amount of college loans held by college grads at 8 different universities who earned degrees there in Drama/Theatre Arts and Stagecraft. We used this college program as an example based upon Wall Street Journal research because Evans offers a wonderful Magnet Program in Entertainment Production and Management Academy. The red bars illustrate the average amount of debt students' held on just this one type of 4-year degree vs. the blue bars showing the median annual income two years after graduation with the same Drama/Theater Arts degree. In general, care should be taken that total college debt does not exceed future annual income or even comes to close to matching annual income regardless of chosen major.
