Maynard Evans High School Community Brief
Monday, April 11, 2022
Evans Community Member,

Welcome to Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement" where our focus is on literacy, rigor and relationships. Our school's pillars of pride, determination and perseverance continue to be on display daily by our students, staff and community.

I want to thank our freshmen and sophomore students who put forth their best efforts into their FSA Writing assessment. The writing assessment started our 2022 testing season and we are looking forward to seeing some positive trends as a result of our students and teachers' hard work.

As another reminder, attendance is critical over these next few weeks. ELA 9 & 10, Geometry, Biology, US History and Algebra 1 students are receiving extra support from our Instructional Coaches as they review skills and standards with small groups of students. Our teachers have prepared their students, and they have done the work. Please be reminded that Tutoring is also available for all Trojans on Tuesday and Thursdays after school with their content area teacher.

While we have many events on the schedule in the coming days, I want to remind our families about Tuesday, April 12th PTSA/SAC meeting. This meeting starts at 5:30pm and is held in our media center.

We are all looking forward to the opening of the EHS Theatre production musical “Little Shop of Horrors” April 21 & 22nd at 7:00pm and April 23rd at 2:00 pm in a few days. This promises to be a terrific musical comedy and I encourage all members of our school community to make time for one of the performances. This would be a wonderful treat for the whole family to attend!

Wishing you a successful week ahead and thank you for your continued support.

Mr. Bailey

Testing
School-Wide ACT Day (April 19th)
On April 19th, Evans will be conducting a School-Wide ACT. All juniors on campus will be taking the ACT. The School-Wide ACT will be a computer-based exam.

Students taking the ACT can potentially use their scores to meet graduation requirements. ACT scores taken on a school day are also college reportable.

Juniors received an email from Ms. Schomberg on Monday, April 11th, with instructions for how to complete the non-test portion of their exam. This needs to be completed before test day.

Students will receive an email from Ms. Schomberg with their testing location by April 15th. On April 19th, all students will need to arrive on campus by 7:20 a.m. to take their exam. Students cannot be admitted to the test rooms once test tickets have been handed out. Students will also need to put their cell phones and smartwatches in their bags and away themselves during testing. Cell phones must be turned off during testing. ACT requires that students that have a phone that sounds during the test be removed from testing.

The Next Step Series
The last two weeks of March, our Senior Trojans were able to participate in the Next Step Series which offered a Next Step Seminar, exposure to careers, mentorships and information for their transition to their next journey. We had numerous opportunities for our Senior Trojans to gather information and ask questions. During the Next Step Series, we had hiring events, college conversations, workshops and so much more. #WeAreReady
Next Step Seminar
The Next Step Seminar brought over 100 Senior Trojans to the gym to participate in attending workshops for Communications, Freshman Financing, Campus Involvement, Resume Building and Interviewing Skills.

We would like to thank The Boys and Girls Club of Central Florida, Morehouse Upward Bound, Rollins Upward Bound, Elevate and Disney for exposing our Senior Trojans to information for their Next Steps. We appreciate your time and are thankful for your partnership!
Next Step Series - Disney Day
One of the events for the Next Steps Series was Disney Day. During Disney Day, our Trojan Seniors were presented information about working at Disney including the benefits of paid college tuition along with the Aspire Program. In the afternoon, over 50 students attended the Mickey Workshop where applications were completed, on the spot interviews were conducted and over 30 Trojans have a start date at Disney. We are very grateful for the partnership with Disney and the future for our Trojans to be able to take advantage of the benefits at Disney. #WeAreReady
World Heart Day
Our Trojans learn hands-on CPR with help from Orange County Fire Rescue
Our 9th and 11th grade students participated in hands-on CPR training in celebration of World Heart Day. This day originally occurred in September, but due to COVID was postponed for schools until March. Our students were able to work with various fire stations from Orange County Fire and Rescue to learn the importance of hands on CPR in the event of an emergency.

This activity, along with additional learning videos provided an opportunity for our school district to engage in legislation, which was signed into a law by Governor Ron DeSantis on June 21, 2021 to provide CPR and basic first aid training for ninth and 11th-graders. It was a great event and we thank OCFD for helping out!
