Maynard Evans High School Community Brief
Wednesday, October 27, 2021
Evans Community Member,

Welcome to Evans High School, "A Place of High Achievement" where our focus is on literacy, rigor and relationships. Our school's pillars of pride, determination and perseverance continue to be on display daily by our students, staff and community.

Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today (Malcolm X, civil right leader). Preparation for school starts in the morning before your arrival. Parents, we need your assistance with ensuring your students' timely arrival to school. Attendance is important and is a major contributor to positive academic outcomes. As you review your student’s 1st quarter report card, ask your student how many absences or tardies they have accumulated in the classes they underperformed, in comparison to the classes they earned satisfactory grades in.

I congratulate the 115 Trojan students who earned straight A’s and the 519 who earned A’s and B’s last quarter. In addition, 615 students were on time to school and class for the 1st marking period, with no tardies. They are to be commended!

Their academic success correlates with being on time for class with limited daily absences. Parents, for the remainder of this 2nd marking period and beyond please look to support our teachers, simply by ensuring your students timely arrival to school and minimize the absences they had last quarter.

We need our Trojans here on time. A slight adjustment could make a world of difference. Attendance matters, every period, and every day.

In Trojan Pride,

Mr. Bailey
Principal

We strive to include everything the students need to know at the state level, including a general knowledge exam and correct identification of citrus/vegetable varieties, insects, diseases, parasites, pathogens, etc.
Morehouse Upward Bound Math & Science Mini STEM Day
On October, 8, 2021 when the majority of our students were enjoying a day of “No School”, our Morehouse Upward Bound students were participating in a Mini STEM Day. Dr. Bennett, the Morehouse Upward Bound Math and Science Director, visited Evans High School and conducted a mini STEM Day where our students participated in STEM activities. Pictured above, students competed to build the strongest and tallest structure using only copy paper and tape that could hold a bag of candy. After the competition, Dr. Bennett discussed weight distribution and the everyday application of weight distribution. Students were also treated to Chick-fil-A for breakfast and lunch.

If you would like to complete an application for the Morehouse Upward Bound Math and Science Program, please see Ms. Benefiel in the CCRC or email: donna.benefiel@ocps.net.

Student Government Association
This past weekend, Evans SGA students had an opportunity to connect with SGA students all over the county and beyond to swap and share ideas. Evans SGA students loved connecting with students that have a different background than themselves. It was great to see and hear what is happening at other schools. Evans SGA gathered a lot of new ideas that they will be narrowing down and planning to implement here to impact the school culture in a positive way.

Six of the SGA members also presented sessions at the SGA Conference on Morning Pep Jams and Trojan Service Week. They were able to share some cool events that are happening at Evans every year. SGA looks forward to the next D3 Conference where more members can exercise their leadership abilities and get more comfortable speaking in front of groups of people they do not know.

Required Extended Tutoring
Evans is committed to pushing our athletes to excel on and off the court. Students who have earned a D/ F on their 1st progress report are required to attend extended tutoring from 2:40- 3:30with the individual teachers in their classroom or in the cafeteria Tuesdays and Thursdays until the next grade report is submitted.

Once students complete tutoring at 3:30 they can attend practice/ games. If they do not, they risk being pulled off the field/ court.
Fall Sports Highlights
Cross Country- Our 2021 Cross Country Season has been a talented young group of athletes. The coach says, “This is by far one of the fastest female teams overall that we’ve had at Evans High School and one of the most determined and unique group of males.” Our girls have had very strong finishes in our meets, winning their first meet, and placing third at the second meet.

With great rankings and solid times, we have the team’s Captain and number one runner, Alisha Boyer. Alisha Boyer is also our most recent female Bracing for Greatness Trojan Athletic Award recipient. This young lady currently balances volleyball and cross country, over a 4.0 GPA, and maintains leadership and dedication in and out of her sports. To add, her twin sister, Queen Boyer is the team’s number two runner, and has a similar situation. Queen is a part of the cross country team and the Dancing Emeralds. She also maintains a high GPA average over 3.0, and has been displaying leadership amongst her teammates. Abrianna Perkins and Aubrey Frost are both freshmen, and are a part of the scoring five runners from this past weekend. Our fifth runner is not a freshman but is new to the sport, and went from the team's seventh best, to a scorer. On the team is also Mariama Kamara and Ar’briel Scott.

The Lady Trojans plan to make it not just to regionals, as well as have runners compete at the state meet. These young ladies put in countless hours and miles, and continue to fight their way to victory each week!

With fall sports winding down, winter sports will be starting tryouts soon! View the tryouts and coach contacts schedule below if any students are interested in participating.

Education Pays!
There are many reasons for someone to continue on with their education and making money is not necessarily #1 on the list. However, 4X per year the US Dept. of Labor checks to see what the differences are in the weekly paychecks between people with varying levels of education. Their latest findings are below and this basic pattern repeats time after time since they began tracking these statistics decades ago:
