Metal Roof Panel HVHZ Deflection Limits Increasing in 2017

The sixth edition of the Florida Building Code becomes effective December 31, 2017. Metal roofing designs on buildings located in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) of South Florida. Deflection limits are how much a member is permitted to deflect between supports and not strength. These limits reduce the unstable structural capacity of metal roofing.

These changes are limited to the HVHZ, which includes Broward and Dade Counties. The rest of Florida is unaffected. Modifications may result in the following:

Support framing spacing may be increased, especially in corners and along edges of metal roof systems.
Structural metal roof panels may be thinner, but not thinner than 24 gauge in accordance with the HVHZ provisions.
Metal roof designs may be more similar to designs used in the rest of the state.
Moor roofing products may be able to pass the TAS 125 testing, allowing for more options to building owners.

Changes in the HVHZ deflection limits for structural metal roof panels are significant, which increase the usable structural capacity of metal roof panels, and may result in more economical roofs and more options for building owners.

Severe Weather Damages Roofs, Downed Trees in South Florida

Monday night’s storms knocked out power to thousands across Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.A fast moving squall line moved quickly across the state overnight bringing damaging winds, lightning and possible isolated tornadoes. Miami-Dade is reporting significant roof damage to multiple structures and several uprooted trees across the county. William T. Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens was closed Monday because of “apparent tornado damage”. The same weather system is responsible for killing at least 19 people and injuring dozens more in Georgia and Mississippi.

Winter is on its way to South Florida. Do a visual inspection of your roof several times a year.
