Objects As Subjects examines contemporary uses of the traditional academic genre, the still life. Objects As Subjects explores the anachronism of art history in contemporary practices aiming to expand and reflect upon our notions of the genre. Hung Salon style, this show is the first in a series of exhibitions that will continue to explore contemporary art's relationship to the traditional genres of the academy.

Exquisite Poop: BLIND REPRODUCTION March 10 - April 15, 2012 Opening Reception Saturday, March 10, 6-9pm Live performance by Abacus Jones 8pm A Gathering of the Tribes 285 East 3rd St. 2nd Floor (Between Ave C & D, near F at 2nd Ave or Delancey/Essex) New York, NY 10009 (212) 674-3778 info@tribes.org / gatheringofthetribes@gmail.com Inspired by the different descriptions Steve Cannon's visitors would give of the art on the walls, and by taking the blind professor to art openings, curator Janet Bruesselbach organized an elaborate art and writing project between 13 artists and writers. It aims to consider the subjectivity of attentive visuality in art writing and the absurdity of symbolic imagery. The artists were invited to contribute a small two-dimensional work, and commit to another. Images, titles, size and media information were then assigned to the writers, who were charged with describing the art as thoroughly and sincerely as possible. These descriptions were nearly randomly assigned to the contributing artists, who were tasked with recreating the artwork they thought the writer had described, without knowing the artist or seeing the original image. The first stage of translation from visual to verbal varies hugely in style and focus, even given stylistic restrictions. The artist's job is even harder and even more subject to the variations of personality and style. Not only was it hard to communicate the most basic aspects of artwork or even the rules of the game, the variations in series are indescribable. The resulting illustration of mis/communication varies from wondrous to farcical and demonstrates the impossibility of representation. Alexis Duque

Trevor Wilson and Vocal Ensemble release debut album Soft Wings.
Release concert to be held at Tribes Gallery in the EastVillage, March 24, 2012.
Trevor Wilson and Vocal Ensemble, a new vocal and guitar based Brooklyn group, is set to release their debut album, Soft Wings, on March 20, 2012. The group is led by 25-year-old composer Trevor Wilson, and includes Michael Chinworth, Jessica Green, Eliza McKelway, Will Stratton, and Alice Tolan-Mee.The ensemble will perform a set, after a set by Will Stratton and poetry reading by Eric Conroe, on March 24th, 2012, at Tribes Gallery (285 E 3rd St, NYC). The concert will begin at 9PM, with a $5 donation going to support Tribes Gallery.

On March 13, we got some encouraging news regarding the possible eviction proceeding at 285 E 3rd St.
In a stay of execution, or, rather, eviction: The judge is going to review the materials from our hearing on the 13th and make a written decision at a later date. But as it stands, our lawyer thinks that she is leaning towards taking the case to the Supreme Court due to our unique circumstances. Up until this point we weren't sure how our efforts would be met in the courtroom, but now it seems that the ruling 'might' be in our favor.
In light of these positive developments, we'd like to take the time to thank you all for writing letters to Mayor Bloomberg and Rosie Mendez in full support of Tribes. The robust and diverse artistic community of Tribes was incredibly generous in expressing their solidarity in this matter, and we are grateful.

Your voices are powerful, but in these times, it also takes financial support to make those voices heard and effective. Part of the agreement set forth on the 13th requires Tribes to remit payment of $7500 towards back rent, which our landlord refused to collect during this time (Jan-Mar 2012). During this litigation, money that was previously allocated for rent was used to pay our utilities, various operating expenses, personnel, producing shows, and gallery maintenance. Unfortunately, our budget cannot handle such a payment at this time.
We are asking anyone who has enjoyed the community events that Tribes has had over its 20 years to help us in the next few days to cover this cost.
