We are pleased to announce that the Martha's Vineyard Film Society has received a $10,000 grant from Newman's Own Foundation in support of its educational programs for school youth.

Join us this week for a locally made film about the Gay Head Light, and some powerhouse film dramas.

KEEPERS OF THE LIGHT with filmmakers Liz Witham and Ken Wentworth . Built over 200 years ago in a small Wampanoag community at the Western tip of Martha's Vineyard island, the Gay Head Lighthouse is one of America's most famous beacons. From whaling days to electrification, "Keepers of the Light" tells the story of evolving technology, heroism and shipwrecks, and the people who are called upon in each generation to keep the light, woven with the story of the recent race against time to save the historic lighthouse from falling over the edge of the rapidly eroding cliffs.

LOVE, GILDA opens a unique window into the honest and whimsical world of beloved performer Gilda Radner, whose greatest role was sharing her story. Working with the Radner estate, director D'Apolito unearthed a collection of diaries and personal audio and videotapes documenting her childhood, her comedy career, her relationships and ultimately, her struggles with cancer. These never-before-seen-or-heard footage and journal entries form the narrative spine of the documentary, allowing Gilda to tell her own story - through laughter and sometimes tears.

MANHATTAN SHORT FILM FESTIVAL hosted by MV Film Society for the 15th consecutive year. In 2018 MANHATTAN SHORT received 1565 entries from 73 countries from which NINE finalists were chosen. Between September 27 and October 7, these captivating nine short films will screen more than 1000 times in over 300 cities on six continents and will all be eligible for OSCAR nomination. And the judges of these short films are you, the audience!

And continuing this week...

After nearly forty years of marriage, JOAN and JOE CASTLEMAN (Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce) are complements. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. THE WIFE interweaves the story of the couple's youthful passion and ambition with a portrait of a marriage, thirty-plus years later--a lifetime's shared compromises, secrets, betrayals, and mutual love.

See you at the movies!

After nearly forty years of marriage, JOAN and JOE CASTLEMAN (Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce) are complements. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as Great American Novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm, and diplomacy into the private role of Great Man's Wife. Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work. Joe's literary star has blazed since he and Joan first met in the late 1950. THE WIFE interweaves the story of the couple's youthful passion and ambition with a portrait of a marriage, thirty-plus years later-a lifetime's shared compromises, secrets, betrayals, and mutual love.

"What unites the film's two halves - what makes it worth watching, period - is the road Close's Joan travels as she decides whether to reclaim authorship of her own life."
--Ty Burr, Boston Globe

In her own words, comedienne Gilda Radner looks back and reflects on her life and career. Weaving together her recently discovered audiotapes, interviews with her friends (Chevy Chase, Lorne Michaels, Laraine Newman, Paul Shaffer and Martin Short), rare home movies and diaries read by modern-day comedians inspired by Gilda (Bill Hader, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Cecily Strong). LOVE, GILDA opens up a unique window into the honest and whimsical world of a beloved performer whose greatest role was sharing her story.

"Love, Gilda is a touching reminder of an iridescent star who shined brightly but for far too short a time. You'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll leave the theater wanting to dive down the YouTube rabbit hole of Gilda Radner."
-- Brandon Katz, New York Observer
