Dancing with Nature

March 2018 Issue 3 Vol 8
News, Life and the Art Culture in the Smoky Mountains

Everyone loves a story. I recently revisited a collection of stories my father wrote. He grew up living next door to Ross Allen, naturalist extraordinaire, and gives a good bit of credit to him for his love of nature which he in turn passed down to generations.   He had stories of alligators and I was reminded of one of my own happening during my elementary school years.   My family owns a cabin in NW FL on a piece of property we call "The Swamp" which has an open body of water where we would fish and swim (that is another story).   There had appeared a rather large gator in the swamp. Due to safety concerns of swans, dogs, and kids, it was captured for transferring to another lake. As shared in previous stories, my 8-sibling herd was transported in the family Land Rover. As we loaded for school the next morning, much to our surprise, that gator was stretched out on the floorboard of the middle seat. When asked what we were to do with our feet, my father said, "Just put them on top of the gator." Taking it in stride but also taking no chances, we propped them up on the seat-back ahead. Stories are our legacy to be shared and passed down. Who will share your stories?

Behind every piece of artwork there is a story. The artists pour their hearts and souls into creating the perfect story that lives on in clay, wood, metal or canvas.  Many have actual experiences, "stories", of locations and inspiration that come to life through their hands. We try to get that information from the artists to pass onto you ....... because, everyone loves a story .

Thank-you to all that came out for downtown's, new to this year, winter schedule of events sponsored by the Waynesville Gallery Association. If you were unable to attend, you missed out. A great time was had by all. We are already preparing for next year with the intention of making them even bigger and better. Stay posted!

Wishing you the blessings of spring's renewal this Easter season ~

Spotlight
Jack Stern
              Oil Painter
Jack Stern lives and works in Jackson County in the mountains of North Carolina where his interests lie in capturing the natural beauty of his rural surroundings in oils, watercolors, and acrylics.

Originally from Colorado, Jack recalls "My Grandmother, Ruth Stern, started me with oil painting when I was fourteen years old." That same year Jack undertook classes with the skilled William Steinbach, in San Diego, California.

Other than study with Steinbach, Jack is primarily self-taught, learning extensively from painting experiences with other painters on location. These location-painting jaunts took him throughout the western states as well as Massachusetts, Alberta, British Columbia, Mexico and North Carolina. Often these trips were in back country on burros and alone up to twenty-four days at a time. As in his youth, he built an understanding of the variety and beauty of the vast landscapes and seascapes that he came in contact with.
