Dear (Contact First Name),

Am I fit? Yes, I know I am.  I participate in two "kick butt" training appointments per week with my  trainer, I run between 6 and 8km, two to three times per week and I attend at least one yoga class per week.  I also try to get in the odd fitness class here and there too.  Yet, I have been humbled by the realization that despite the fact that I encourage clients every day to be active and exercise, I actually have a very sedentary job!  Yes, my job as a personal trainer/business owner is pretty sedentary!!  How did I come to realize this... I was inspired by a couple of my training clients who were trying to accomplish the recommended 10,000 steps per day with their FitBits. I was cheering them on and encouraging them to go for those steps when I started to wonder just how many steps do I get in each day?

Well, I got a surprise when I starting wearing my Garmin and tracking my daily steps.  I was shocked to learn that on an average day, I was only getting in anywhere between 2,500 and 4,000 steps!  Me, "Miss fit"... "Miss fitness role model" to my clients, "Miss encourage others to meet their goals" yet I was not even close to achieving those same goals for myself!!!

So, I've started walking... I've learned that to get in my 10,000+ steps (or approximately 8km.) I have to go outside for at least a 30 - 45 minute walk each day.  On the days that I run, it's not so critical to get in the longer walks, but I still have to go for a short walk (15 to 20 minutes).  I'm now walking to my yoga classes, to the post office, to do errands around town and I've found some new and wonderful benefits from my walking.  I tend to be a bit of a workaholic and the walking is getting me out of my basement office and outside into the sunshine and fresh air.  I get to revisit my community checking out the lovely gardens, say hello to people as I pass by and enjoy the ambiance of the day.  The walks during my day are giving me much needed breaks to clear my head and re-energize myself to tackle my unfinished work back at my office.

Today while I was out for my walk, I stopped and patted a baby toad on the sidewalk, I talked to some ladies in a front garden and got a referral to a local landscape company, I ran into a former trainer who used to work for Body Design and had a quick chat with her, I made conversation with a worker outside of a storefront and found out who the new business was that was moving into Town and while walking on the gravel path in the park, I had a vivid, flashback memory of being at my grandmother's cottage in my youth.  That memory was triggered by the sound of the gravel under my shoes, the heat of the morning sun on my body, the rustle of the trees beside me and the silence... suddenly, I was back walking the gravel road at my grandmother's cottage when I was somewhere between 10 and 12 years old.

Some of my walks are uneventful and end up being more of a task to complete during my day.   But other walks open me up to my community, show me wildlife, give me insights to how my body is feeling, and sometimes, I even talk out loud to myself... sorting out my problems and listening to my opinions.
So, I'm working on getting in my 10,000 steps most days of the week and have realized that walking is so much more than just exercise, it's part of the self-care needed for my body, mind and soul.

Till next month....

Park Fitness For Parents!  by Brandi McCarthy, RHN

I thought this article was very relevant as Body Design has quite a group of new moms in our Summer Mommy and Baby Boot camp class.  These ladies come to class each week with their little ones strapped into their strollers ready to work hard, get healthy and fit.  Brandi has written an excellent article on how to incorporate an exercise routine into spending time with your kids (or grandkids) at the park.   Read more.

The PanAm Games Torch Run comes to Mt. Albert and Body Design!

The PamAm Games Torch Run came to Mt.
