A Message From the Executive Director
During a recent trip to my home in New Mexico, I sat with my mother one evening on the back porch reminiscing about her career in special education and listening to songs from Camelot, the magnificent Lerner and Loewe 1960's Broadway musical. So, I began to think about what IDA's Camelot will be.... Read more.
Implementation Science: Key to Success
Implementation science was the topic of a pre-conference symposium presented at the 2014 International Dyslexia Association (IDA) conference in San Diego. While IDA members have long embraced the science of reading, there is another science of equal importance that directly influences the success of lasting change in reading instruction within schools and districts: implementation science. This is no small subject, either in depth or in importance. Read more.
IDA Publishes "Dyslexia and the Brain"
IDA Fact SHeets Developmental dyslexia is associated with difficulty in processing the orthography (the written form) and phonology (the sound structure) of language. As a way to understand the origin of these problems, neuroimaging studies have examined brain anatomy and function of people with and without dyslexia. AT for Reading: Alternative Strategies using AT

The last time you visited, you had some young children with you, and we talked about how to help them as they are learning to read. Today I want to start talking about AT strategies for those in the reading to learn stage (Chall, 1983). Around third or fourth grade, the primary focus for reading instruction changes from helping students fluently make symbol to sound connections (fluent decoding) to using these decoding skills to learn new information. Read More.

Memorial: Dorothy Blosser Whitehead

"A meaningful life is not being rich or popular, but being highly educated, being real and humble. And being able to share ourselves and touch the lives of others."

We mourn the loss of a force of nature in the field of literacy and learning-the fearless and formidable Dorothy Whitehead. Born into the Roaring Twenties in Berkeley, CA, her life spanned years of war and peace, not only in world affairs but also in the world of teaching reading, especially to those who struggle with reading.
