Calling All Neighbors! Volunteer Opportunity

Please help us put our best foot forward for The Hooley™! On Saturday, May 3, at 10 a.m., join Executive Director Steve Lorenz and a group of volunteers in front of West Park Station to clean out, mulch, and plant annuals in the planters on Lorain Avenue. Many have already signed up, but we can always use your help! Bring work gloves and a small pruning tool, digging tool, or shovel, and join us! KCDC provides all the materials -- and light refreshments when the work is done. Red Seal Electric has donated $300 toward the project, for which we are very grateful. We'll be happy to see you for any amount of time you can volunteer. Bring your neighbors, church group, co-workers, and friends! Registration is not required, but appreciated, to [email protected].

If rain is heavy, watch the KCDC Facebook page and @KammsCorners on Twitter for a possible postponement to Sunday at 10 a.m.

Free Comic Book Day is Saturday, May 3

Carol & John's Comic Book Shop hosts its 13th Annual Free Comic Book Day this weekend. It's always the first Saturday in May, but because comic books can be given away starting midnight, the event is split into two separate, yet equally thrilling events. The Midnight Early Release event begins officially at 10 p.m. on May 2 and lasts until 2:30 a.m. The Day event begins at 10 a.m. on May 3, and ends at 7 p.m. Some 25,000 comic books will be given away, 10 per person. They're split 50/50 between the midnight and day events. Other giveaways include graphic novels, refreshments, and photos. Guests are encouraged to come costumed as their favorite comic book characters. Visit their website for all the details! Carol & John's Comic Book Shop is at Kamms Plaza, 17462 Lorain Avenue. Call 216-252-0606 for more information.

Annual Golf Outing to Benefit Our Y

The West Park Family Branch of the YMCA has served the West Park community since the branch was built in 1957. Since then, the Y has taught generations of families the important lifelong skills of water safety, physical education, and character development. The Y continues to serve the community with over 2,700 members.

With help from events like the annual golf outing, and support from their many generous members, community partners, and staff, the West Park branch hopes to raise $75,000 in 2014. The money will be used to support a scholarship program to ensure that nobody is turned away for lack of funds. Join the cause and have fun, too, at the Hickory Nut Golf Course in Columbia Station on Friday, June 27. The registration form has all the details. Click here

Shave Your Mane Exceeds Fundraising Expectations

When St. Mark School held its head shaving fundraiser event Michael Orbany of St. Bernadette School is a warrior fighting cancer for the second time. He is surrounded by students. At right is Jason Salupo, owner of West Park Station, who also supported the cause. on March 20, the goal was to raise $10,000 in the fight against childhood cancer through the St. Badrick's Foundation. As help from the community poured in, the goal was raised to $25,000. Then 50 heads to shave became 102 shaved for the cause resulting in final donations of $42,022! Thanks to all who donated! Read the full story in the spring issue of Kamm's Corners Magazine, distributing next week.
