Table Tips: Get Off the Plateau

Does it feel like your game has reached a plateau and you don't know to get better or think you can't? If so, consider what science teaches us about how to move our brains off a plateau.

    1. Believe that you can get better and are not limited by what you think is the edge of your talent, intelligence, visualization skills, experience, age at which you started playing bridge, or anything else you you have decided keeps you from being the better player you want to be.

    2. Intentionally push yourself beyond your comfort zone. You need to fail to succeed. Challenge yourself by "playing up." Over time, the experience will make you a better player.

    3. Be scientific as you analyze your results. Study summaries and hand records to study your games, consult better players about what you did well and why, try to identify which parts of your game need improvement. Don't try to get better by guessing, but use data to figure it out.

Read more about moving off a plateau in Joshua Foer's Moonwalking with Einstein or with an online search of "OK plateau."
