In this 400-page book, Author Ed Heuvink takes the reader on a journey into the great years of this spectacular race. The book describes the Targa Florio 1955 to 1973 every year with short, informative text. In addition, it portrays the fascinating drivers and cars, as well as the specifics of the Targa - such as training on public roads - from A to Z. All of this is achieved by large-format images from the archives of Bernard Cahier, LAT and McKlein, including many color photographs from the first world championship years. The foreword was written by "Professor" Nino Vaccarella. In addition to the headmaster from Palermo and three-time Targa Florio winner, many other former heroes tell their stories.

Only very few pilots in Formula 1 also competed in sports cars and desert rallies. Even fewer drivers enjoyed success in all three disciplines. In his almost 40 year career Jacky Ickx was always competitive, whether aboard a 350+ km/h Porsche 956 at Le Mans, a Formula 1 Ferrari or Mercedes G-model in the Paris-Dakar.

 

This detailed retrospective covers Ickx's career from his first races in a Ford Lotus Cortina and Mustang. The book describes the Grand Prix career of the Belgian at Ferrari, Brabham and Lotus and looks back at his great successes in sports cars, including the six overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Ford and Porsche, where he earned the nickname "Mister Le Mans". Finally, it also covers Jacky's desert adventures, such as the infamous Paris-Dakar Rally.

 

At 256 pages this comprehensive work shows more than 200 photos from the career of the versatile Ickx, including many previously unpublished images. In addition, some of Jacky's former companions - former teammate Mario Andretti and Jochen Mass - discuss their experiences with Ickx.
