We are proud to announce a new collaborative program!
An Opera is Born of Our Community

Motivated by the shared belief that the power of creative expression can change communities and prepare youth for future success, Opera Maine will collaborate with The Telling Room, Dan Sonenberg, and The University of Southern Maine Voice Department to launch this special program where youth participants will write their own libretto and pass it on to Dan Sonenberg, composer in residence at the University of Southern Maine, where students will premiere the work.

This grant is made possible by an OPERA America Innovation Grant, supported by the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation and The Crewe Foundation.

Calling all High School writers and poets who are interested in collaborative writing and performing arts!

Be a part of this exciting project! Students from this Telling Room summer camp will write the libretto, pass it on to composer Dan Sonenberg who will then work with the Opera department at USM to create an opera that will premier in Spring 2018. Camp participants will get a chance to learn more about this multidisciplinary art form and dive into writing a single story together. Campers will also get a chance to attend two free Opera Maine performances. There will be additional opportunities throughout the year for these writers to be a part of the process as this opera comes to life.
