Our Savior's This Week

Dear Church,

It's something I've joked about for years, and I guess it's true what they say about humor: That there is always a thread of truth revealed in it.  So I'll let you in on my little quandary today.  Why do people like to sit in the back of church?  Lutherans love the back row!  I don't know about Methodists or Presbyterians, but you people are back-seat dwellers!

This is not so at a rock concert, is it?  Buy a ticket for Lady Gaga or The Rolling Stones; the front three rows are considered the VIP section.  In the church, the front three rows are a vast wasteland!  I had a friend who was dating a young woman who also happened to be the organist at her church, and she invited him to worship one Sunday.  He arrived early and, knowing he would have to sit alone, he took the seat in the back row on the aisle.  He was the only one in the sanctuary when an older gentleman arrived and stood right beside him, looked down and said, "Excuse me, you're in my seat!"

My theories are many. You sit in the back because you want to get out of church as soon as possible to get a good booth at Joseph's.  Or you are afraid that if you're up front, the pastor might ask you to do something, like usher or read the lessons. Or, if it's a sermon about money, you don't want to be close enough for the pastor to see tears in your eyes!

After doing this for 30 years now, I have come to two conclusions.  The first is that, I'm never going to change you; I am never going to live long enough to get you all to move up into the VIP section.  But the second conclusion is more valuable than the first; I'm just glad you're here! I am grateful for your faithfulness to come every Sunday, take your place in your seat, and join others in worshipping this God who loves us.  In this regard, I suppose every seat is in the VIP section. Please be seated.

See you in the back row,

Pastor Steve
