IRt/c Applications for a Safe and Efficient Winter
February 2011
Greetings!

I am sure that most people in the world at this time of the year are sick of the word, 'SNOW". Please read this newsletter that will discuss a few applications related to snow and then we won't bring the word up again.

Exergen IRt/c's are used to measure snow temperature in the detection of avalanches and also the temperature of the road used to detect ice formation. And to help you drive in the snowy and icy conditions IRt/c's help tire manufacturers build high quality reliable treads for your vehicle.

Energy Conservation is also important this time of year. You can accurately test stream traps with our D Series Microscanner and increase the efficiency of your heating system.

On the lighter side, see how our TemporalScanner had a role in this past Super Bowl's Game Time Temperature and in Hollywood to detect Bieber Fever!

Sincerely,

Alpug GmBH in Switzerland uses their ALPINE NATURAL HAZARDS AVALANCHE AND PERMAFROST DEVELOPMENT & RESEARCH MEASURING + WARNING SYSTEMS to measure melting snow so that they can provide accurate warnings when an avalanche is about to occur. The Exergen IRt/c.5-K-50F/10C is a hermetically sealed (NEMA 4X, IP 67), self powered sensor that can withstand harsh outdoor conditions and provide accurate readings through the elements. The IRt/c's short wave spectral response (6.5-14 um) allows for measurements under both a clear and cloudy sky.

FORECASTING ICE FORMATION ON ROADS
rdcondapogeeCampbell Scientific and Apogee Instruments have developed a system that is a cost effective way to forecast ice formation on Italian road surfaces. The logger stores data from odometers, geographic positioning  systems (GPS), and an Exergen IRt/c (they call IRTS-P) to measure the road temperature. The program is operated by the University of Perugia and Ecosearch, a Campbell Scientific integrator based in Italy. Due to budget limitations costly ice detection systems (spectral cameras) could not be considered. The IRt/c was attractive due to it's low cost, reliability and fast response time. Read more here.

SNOW TIRE PRODUCTION
tire vulc
To get through all the snow, ice and avalanches, you need good tread on your snow tires. Tire manufacturers such as Cooper Tire use IRt/c.5's to measure the internal tread temperature using a special Heat Balance calibration, in the vulcanization process Check out our TechNote on Measuring Tire Tread Internal Temperature. By measuring the internal tread temperature Cooper Tire has an advantage over their competition as they are increasing their production line speed. Read more about Speed Boost Methods here.

STEAM TRAP TESTING
Properly functioning steam traps discharge little (if any) steam into the condensate return system. Malfunctioning traps discharge a great deal of steam, which ultimately is vented into the atmostphere, and is a real financial loss.
Click here to read more about how the powerful and fast D501 infrared scanner can accurately measure the temperature created by the steam back pressure and help you run a more efficient heating system.

Two events that happened this winter were the Super Bowl and the Grammy Awards. Congratulations to the Green Bay Packers for winning Super Bowl XLV and also to the 59 contestants who guessed the correct Game Time Temperature during our promotion throughout the NFL playoffs. Hear the Westwood All Star Announcers (which include Kevin Harlan, Boomer Esiason, Randy Cross, Dave Sims, James Lofton, Ian Eagle, Trent Green, Tony Boselli, Mark Malone, Kevin Kugler and Howard David) give the Game Time Temperature at www.gametimetemperature.com

During the Grammy Awards there were millions of young girls throughout the world catching Bieber Fever. Although Justin Bieber did not win a Grammy, he was still and is still one of the most popular artists in the music industry. See how Access Hollywood host, Billy Bush checks for Beiber Fever with the Exergen TemporalScanner.

Thank you for taking the time to read my newsletter. The next newsletter will be in the Spring and all the snow should be melted in most parts of the world.
