Turning the calendar to November seems out of alignment when the temperatures are in the 80s, but alas, here we are!

One of the wonderful aspects of November and the season of Thanksgiving is the attitude of gratitude that envelops us all.  We cannot say enough how grateful we are to everyone who makes Southern Om such a special place. It starts with our students, who show up on their mats each and every day. And our amazing teachers and our friendly support staff help to create an experience we hope is Your Oasis from the everyday world.

As we travel towards the holiday season, our first stop is Thanksgiving Day and you will be able to practice all morning long. We'll be offering classes at 6, 8:15, 10 and 12 noon. Our regular schedule resumes on Friday, November 25 - otherwise known as BLACK FRIDAY at Southern Om!!! It's a HUGE day of storewide savings - be sure to read below for all the specials we will be offering that day.

We hope to see you at the studio soon!

Mark Crocco & Whitney DeSanti

First off we are so very humbled and honored to be a part of the Southern Om family.  The quality of people both students and teachers is nothing short of a blessing.
Whitney's Story
Mark and I have been best friends for five
years exactly to the day of our engagement.  We met in Colorado while he was coaching baseball at the Air Force Academy.

Last December, the rigorous schedule of being a Division 1 college baseball coach had taken a toll on Mark.  I insisted that he shoul d take sometime over the holiday break to himself.

Mark would call it his 27-day "passion project" I like to call it Mark's full circle of learning to find balance in his life. Long story short - this trip led to Mark finding inner peace.  He started coming to Southern Om as his time to meditate and have quiet that he needed on a daily basis. Soon after, he invited me to try a class and reluctantly I went.

Southern Om has completely transformed our lives and
health! The family atmosphere and challenging dynamics of each class/instructor is what truly makes each day a new experience!

From Mark's Perspective
As a former athlete Mark loves to challenge himself. He travels a lot for his job and always tries new studios while he is on the road. Hands down Sarah & Pace have assembled a staff and culture at Southern Om that is truly one of a kind. It is our home and we are blessed by them everyday.

Congratulations Mark & Whitney on your recent engagement.  We love the positive spirit you bring to Southern Om every day!

NEW TEACHER SPOTLIGHT:
Mandy Learo

Mandy Learo has been sharing her practice with students since 2008, when she earned her advanced
yoga teacher certification in India. By way of continuing education, she has since collected yearly credits from the Kripalu Center in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. Mandy draws from years of experience teaching diverse populations in studio, gym, and university environments. She is particularly interested in how the traditional practices and philosophies of the East have transformed due to the differing perspective and unique needs of the modern Western yogi.

As our understanding of human psychology and physiology grow, so too does the way
we approach and practice yoga. Mandy operates from the  philosophy that yoga is a living art and science. Mandy moved to Greenville in August of 2016 with her husband and infant son, and she is grateful for the opportunity to be part of the yoga community here. For more information, visit mandylearo.com.

Mandy will be teaching the Southern Flow series at Southern Om Hot Yoga.  Welcome Mandy!

Take Your Practice to the Next Level!
Kirtan with Erick Herlong
Saturday, November 5 from 6-8 pm
$10 donation will be collected

Please join us for a blissful evening enjoying the Bhakti Yoga practice of Kirtan, a tradition of singing universal mantras in a call and response format. Bhakti yoga is one of the four main yogic paths to enlightenment. Bhakti means "devotion" or "love" and this path contains various practices to unite the bhakta with the divine. One of those practices, Kirtan is the most popular path in the west, as it invites everyone to participate in whatever way feels right for them. It only requires your showing up with an open mind and a joyful spirit. During the Kirtan we will blend our voices to create a deep sense of connection to something greater than ourselves, as we purify our hearts and liberate our souls with this ancient devotional practice.

Sign up here, or at the Front Desk, or call us at 329-1114.  The cost is a $10 donation.
Yin Class with Melissa Howard
Saturday, December 3 from 6-7:30 pm

Please join Melissa Howard for an hour and a half of Yin Yoga! In a Yin Yoga class, you will hold a pose for 3-5 minutes. When holding a pose for longer periods of time the practitioner is able to get into the deeper parts of the body, the Yin parts. Tendons, ligaments, and joints are exercised, not stretched and the benefits of Yin are endless. Another benefit when exercising these yin parts, we also tap into the lines in the body, called meridians, that connect with the organs in the body. During this workshop we'll focus on the spine, forward folding, back bending, twisting, and side flexion, as well as the hips. This is a workshop you won't want to miss! As good as it will be for the body, a Yin practice can be challenging for the mind, because we rest into the poses. You will be talked through each posture and gently guided from one pose to another with more yang like movements to help the the continuation of the blood flow to these yin-like places in the body. This will also help ease the mind when it seems to get mentally challenging! Sounds fun, yes?!

Cost is $20.  Bring a mat, towel and water.

Sign up here, or at the Front Desk.

Why It's Worth It To Make Time For Yoga Every Day - Even When You're Crazy Busy
by Leigh Weingus, mbg Yoga & Fitness Editor
Courtesy of mindbodygreen.com

If you've ever said the words "there aren't  enough hours in the day," you're not alone.

While there's no doubt that most of us have full plates, studies show that we're not  quite as busy as we think we are-meaning you probably have more time for yoga than you think you do. Which is a good thing, because yoga  has benefits way beyond the physical practice.

Whether it's a two-minute flow in your apartment or an hour-long class at a nearby studio, here are four ways yoga can make your super-busy life a little more manageable:

1. Yoga helps you stay present.
Life seems to be filled with never-ending to-do lists. And when we spend all day checking items off that list and immediately moving on to the next thing, it can be hard to stay present.

That's where yoga comes in-spending a few minutes on your mat will help you stay in the moment.

"I find that when I practice yoga on my trips around the world, I can more fully take in the beauty of the places that I see," yoga instructor  Lauren Taus tells mbg. "I can be more present in my conversations with others, and I can more comfortably be in the flow of life."

2. Yoga does wonders for digestion.
It may not always be the case, but for the most part being busy means being stressed out-and stress wreaks havoc on your  gut.

In order to keep your digestive system on track,  try taking a seated spinal twist, apanasana (knees hugged into your chest), and child's pose. If you run through each of these poses a few times, you'll beat bloat and be able to get through your day so much more easily.

3. Yoga helps you stay grounded and balanced.
When you're spending 10 hours a day at the office, staying grounded is tough. It can seem like your entire life is consumed by an endless cycle of work and attempting to get enough sleep. Here's the great thing about yoga: It brings a little balance into your life and reminds you of what's important.

"I take yoga with me everywhere I go as a means to stay grounded and balanced in my life. My daily practice is the same wherever I am-it involves seated meditation, prayer, and asana," Lauren tells mbg. "Taking the time for all these things allows me to stay centered no matter what is happening around me, no matter where I am."

4. Yoga helps you sleep better.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, stress is highly correlated with  sleep problems, and lack of sleep makes you more stressed out-it's a vicious cycle. So if your lifestyle is making it difficult for you to get your seven to eight hours a night in, it's time to turn to yoga.
In a  national survey, 55 percent of people practicing yoga reported that it helped them sleep better. So when it comes to insomnia, yoga is probably a great place to start. In terms of  poses to try before bedtime, go for locust pose, legs up the wall, and a supine spinal twist.

Namaste, and here's to living a more balanced life.
