Dear Girl Scout Family,
I was in Girl Scouts in third and fourth grade ... and then my family moved. I didn't get reconnected until I joined as staff in 1997. Because of everything I've learned about the benefits of Girl Scouting (and the growth I've experienced), I was very happy when we announced girls can participate in "everything Girl Scouts" even if a troop setting doesn't work out. That all being said, I have some pretty vivid memories of those two childhood years.
One of my fondest memories happened at camp. Our troop spent an overnight during Camp Clean Up. We divided our time between camp chores and fun outdoor activities. My group was assigned to painting the pontoon. What a rusty mess ... and was I antsy to remedy that! Finally, staff handed me a paintbrush. But wait, not just "a paintbrush" - it was an adult-sized paint brush -- I'm sitting taller just writing that. I felt so grown up!
Surprisingly, I remember a lot from that weekend: games, swimming, boating. Laughing into the night. The paintbrush has become a powerful story on my personal leadership journey. It inspires me to want to give the Girl Scout experience to every girl. I've had a lot of "revelations" from spending time in the outdoors since then, too. They've helped shape me as a person and as a leader. Maybe you remember a "revelation" in the outdoors, too and you will join me in encouraging others to get outside this summer.
Friends, we're a few weeks from the first Girl Scout Camp session. Please don't let your girl (or you!) miss out on the fun leadership experience of camp. Sign up today for Girl Scout Camp. If your girl registers for camp and re-registers now for Girl Scouts ... we'll even give you a free camp t-shirt as an enticement to give it a try.
Thanks for being part of Girl Scouts. Have a great week!
