Conference

The South Texas Youth Conference occupied the building last Friday and Saturday. This new event had an estimated 300 attendants and they are striving to make this an annual event that would grow in attendance each year.

Training

On August 28, Animal Cruelty Investigator (ACI) David Travis assisted the Texas Department of State Health Services' Zoonosis Control Division by presenting the topics:

  • Introduction to Animal Control
  • Communication Skills
  • Court Conduct

This training consisted of 35 students, of which 33 had less than eight months of experience. Travis shared his experience with the students and provided "tricks of the trade" to help them become professional public servants.

Vector Control

Environmental Health Services staff conducted pesticide spraying throughout the Island to minimize the mosquito count. We will continue to monitor both weather conditions and mosquito activity to target areas of need.

Beach Emergency Lane

Public Works Crew removed the posts & ropes that were used as an emergency lane on the beach last week. They will be installed again next summer. Clayton Brashear, of Clayton's Beach Bar & Grill, complimented the Beach Maintenance and Public Works crews on how they handled beach cleaning, maintenance and provision of the safety lanes on the beach. He said they did a great job over the summer, but especially over all the busy holiday weekends.

New Location

The Transit Department administrative offices have relocated to 3401 Padre Blvd, Suite C.

Recycling
Recyclable items can be taken to Old City Hall every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Items that can be recycled are:
  • Newspaper
  • Cardboard
  • Office Paper
  • Aluminum
  • Tin
  • Plastic
To offer a better recycling service please:
  • Compact, crush or break down plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, aluminum cans or any other items that may be reduced in size. This helps us use the most amount of space in the bins.
  • Remove any food, liquid, metal fasteners, adhesive materials or other items that may contaminate the whole load.
