GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Award

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada announced the City of South Padre Island received the GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget.

The award represents a significant achievement by the City. It reflects the commitment of the City Council and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, the City had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity's budget serves as:

  • A policy document
  • A financial plan
  • An operations guide
  • A communications device
Budget documents must be rated "proficient" in all four categories, and the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award. Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.

The Government Finance Officers Association is a nonprofit professional association serving nearly 18,000 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.

Meet and Greet
The City of South Padre Island will be hosting a Meet & Greet on Wednesday, June 18,  at 5 p.m. to welcome Rachel Flores as the new SPI Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) Director and Denise Arnold as the new Director of Sales for the CVB. The public is invited to join us at the City Council Room on the 2nd floor at City Hall, 4601 Padre Blvd.

Recycling
Approximately 1,543 pounds of recyclable material were collected! Thank you to everyone for doing their part in keeping South Padre Island beautiful!

Training
Fire and Beach Patrol both participated in BRITE (Beach Rescue Interagency Team Exercise) on June 11, along with USCG Station South Padre Island and Cameron County Beach Patrol. This exercise gives all first responder agencies with responsibilities seaward from the shores of Isla Blanca Beach to Beach Access #6 an opportunity to develop familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of each participating agency in order to optimize coordinated response during routine assistance and emergency rescue incidents.

Public Works Yard
The Public Works crews began moving the equipment and supplies to the new yard last week. The contractor should pour the last section of the concrete pad next week so we can relocate the rolloff dumpsters.

China Visitors
China is the 7th largest international market traveling to the United States and the 8th largest international market visiting Texas! Travel from China is projected to triple during the six year period from 2012-2018, increasing by an amazing 229%! Shopping is at the top of the agenda for our wonderful Asian guests, with 87% of visitors splashing some cash at retail stores. CLSA (Credit Lyonnais Securities Asia) said they spend an average of $4,400 per trip on everything from high-end hotels to cosmetics. We WELCOME these guests to our beautiful Island!

Recycling
Recyclable items can be taken to Old City Hall every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Items that can be recycled are:
  • Newspaper
  • Cardboard
  • Office Paper
  • Aluminum
  • Tin
  • Plastic
To offer a better recycling service please:
  • Compact, crush or break down plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, aluminum cans or any other items that may be reduced in size. This helps us use the most amount of space in the bins.
