Development Services Department
The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a workshop on amendments to the Comprehensive Plan at 3:00 PM on Thursday during their regular meeting on May 15, 2014. The meetings will be held at the City Council Chamber in the Municipal Building.  All interested parties are invited to attend and be heard.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Sungman Kim, Director of Development Services at [email protected] or at (956) 761-8113.




CVB Director
Rachel Flores was hired as the new CVB Director for the City; she will start in her new position on June 9, 2014. Rachel has a degree in Film from Cornell University and is serving as the Executive Director for the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation. Rachel's experience also includes working in New York City as Director of Communications and Marketing, and Project Coordinator for a financial-based company. The interview panel selected her unanimously based on her marketing and management background.






RGV Respiratory Care
RGV Respiratory Care will occupy the Centre this week; they bring
approximately 200 attendees. Organizers of this returning event
will be visiting with RGV Sales Rep. Morgan Taylor to determine
their 2015 dates. We welcome back all of the therapists and
their presenters.




Weedy Lots
A weedy lot survey of the east side of Padre Blvd. was completed; 54 letters were mailed to notify property owners of violations. A follow-up survey will be conducted in 10 days.






Water Tower Park
The Public Works (PW) crews completed installing the rubber padding in two of the playground areas and half on the final third section. We placed an order for more clips that should arrive within a week so they can complete the installation of the new surface tiles.






Sidewalk Project
Public Work Staff is obtaining TXDOT permits, construction plans and bids for the replacement of two existing sidewalk sections
along the east side of Padre Blvd. The first block section is between E. Dolphin and E. Red Snapper and the second is at
the 6300 block of Padre Blvd. Former Public Works Director
Scott Fry, P.E., will be the engineer of record for the project.




Seaweed Piles
Public Works crews began relocating and spreading the recent large
amounts of seaweed piles that were deposited in front of the dunes; they are currently working on the south end. The City rented an excavator and 3-yard front-end loader for this project.






WAVE Ridership
Ridership for The WAVE for the month of April is 56,912, which is up by 5,047 riders from April of 2013. The monthly total hours The WAVE buses operated for April is 1,681. The monthly total miles The WAVE buses traveled is 29,039.






Metro Connect Ridership
Ridership for the Metro Connect Blue Line for the month of April is 4,236, which is down by 384 riders from March. The monthly total hours the MC Blue Line buses operated for April is 480. The monthly total miles the MC Blue Line buses traveled is 14,188.

Recycling
Recyclable items can be taken to Old City Hall every Saturday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Items that can be recycled are:
  • Newspaper
  • Cardboard
  • Office Paper
  • Aluminum
  • Tin
  • Plastic
To offer a better recycling service please:
  • Compact, crush or break down plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, aluminum cans or any other items that may be reduced in size. This helps us use the most amount of space in the bins.
  • Remove any food, liquid, metal fasteners, adhesive materials or other items that may contaminate the whole load. 

   


New Phone Numbers

The City of South Padre Island changed its telephone system for improved services on Friday, June 28, resulting in a change of most existing numbers. The main published telephone numbers will remain the same. All other telephone numbers and extensions will change. The new telephone numbers started on Friday, June 28, 2013. Animal Control
Lost or found an animal on the Island? The South Padre Island's Animal Control is working together with the Friends of Animals Rescue Group. Their foster-based recovery center helps to reunite lost and found pets with their families. Friends of Animal Rescue will make every effort to reunite lost animals with their families. Animals that are not reunited will be vetted by Friends of Animal Rescue and placed with new families. Lost or found a pet please call

Incentive Policy

The South Padre Island Economic Development Corporation and the City of South Padre Island have approved an Incentive Policy in order to assist qualified new and existing businesses and to benefit the economic climate on the Island. Businesses can apply for property tax abatements as well as sales tax abatements for improvements that will contribute to the economy of South Padre Island. The City and the EDC will evaluate the applications to determine if they meet the established criteria for the programs. Pet of The Week
Vivian



This is Vivian and she is looking for a new home to live out her senior years. She is 13-years-old and her two front paws have been declawed. She is spayed and is current on all her vaccinations. If you have room in your heart and home for her please come and meet her at Friends of Animal Rescue. We are located at 4908 Padre Blvd.  We are open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM.
