"Treasure It, Don't Trash It"
The City of South Padre Island is again kicking off the "Treasure It, Don't Trash It!" anti-litter awareness campaign together with the summer season during Memorial Day weekend and you're invited! Volunteers will be meeting at the Treasure Island city beach access between Bahama & Atol St. at noon on Sat., May 24; stop by if you want to help keep our beautiful beaches clean.

The campaign is designed to highlight the importance of keeping the beach clean in order to protect our environment and also to ensure everyone gets to enjoy their day at the beach.Code enforcement officers, along with volunteers, will monitor the beach for trash that is commonly left behind, including cans, plastic bottles, broken beach chairs, sand toys, Styrofoam and paper. Another top trash item is cigarette butts, which many fail to consider trash. Littering can result in fines up to $2,000.

The anti-litter campaign also aims to promote pride of ownership among visitors. By recognizing that the beach belongs to everyone, it is expected that beachgoers will be extra vigilant in keeping the beach clean and will even be proactive in removing litter they find.

"Treasure It, Don't Trash It" includes a billboard on Highway 100 heading to the Island, anti-litter posters at participating area restaurants and the easily recognizable beach monitors who will reach out to people on the beach to spread the word. The campaign will run through the summer.

Memorial Day
The South Padre Island City Hall will be closed in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 26, 2014. City Hall will open on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at regular business hours. Have a HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!
