A Message from Miss Fleming
|
Dear Frederica Families,
As we settle into the second semester with great enthusiasm, there is much to celebrate and spotlight on our campus and beyond. Important and impressive work continues in the classrooms, laboratories, and studios; students are making a difference in their lives and the lives of others through their service learning and community service projects; student-athletes are building wonderful memories and learning valuable lessons through their victories and defeats; and lifelong friendships and connections are being established at every level.
On Tuesday, I had the opportunity to accompany two of our extraordinary students who competed in the St. Simons Island Rotary annual high school speech competition. Alistair Campbell and Ryan McHugh were selected to represent Frederica Academy as they competed against students from Brunswick High and Glynn Academy. I was so proud of them. They were extremely articulate and displayed great maturity, thoughtfulness, charisma, and knowledge about how Rotary is making a difference in our community and communities around the world. I never tire of hearing compliments about our students, and the luncheon on Tuesday was no exception. The Rotarians were effusive in their praise for both young men and the wonderful stories they are hearing about our school and our students. Alastair receiving the First Place award and a $1,000 scholarship made it all even better.
There is much to look forward in the coming weeks. Kindergarten students are tracking the school calendar with great anticipation of the upcoming 100th Day of School celebration. Fifth graders are preparing for their April Willy Wonka performance. Middle School students are enjoying their new Odyssey of the Mind program and the progress they are making in their band and music classes. Our swimmers are eagerly preparing for their upcoming state meet in Atlanta and our varsity girl and boy basketball players are understandably proud of their undefeated records in region play ... highlighted by outstanding road victories against Bulloch Academy on Friday night. Undoubtedly, our seniors have the most to be excited about as they continue to receive notifications about college acceptances and, in turn, begin the process of finalizing their college decisions. It is not surprising that the largest graduating class in the school's history is poised for great success.
As we embrace every moment of this school year, we are also beginning to make plans for the 2019-2020 school year. I am keenly invested in these preparations ... especially now that I will continue to serve as the Interim Head of School through next year. My experiences with our students, parents, faculty, administrators, staff, trustees, and other members of the FA family over the past few months have been heartwarming and invigorating. I feel so blessed to lead such a unique and wonderful school and am very excited about the next eighteen months.
As we begin to look to the future, please click HERE to access and download the 2019-2020 school year master calendar.
Please know that my door is always open should you want to visit with me.
Warmest regards.
Ellen E. Fleming

Second Grade Flat Me Projects
|
On Friday, Second Grade students mailed their Flat Me's to friends and relatives throughout the country and the Bahamas. After reading the book,
Flat Stanley, students created flat versions of themselves and chose a recipient.
With the help of Mrs. Holt, they ran their envelopes through the postage machine and said farewell. Students look forward to receiving updates on the adventures their Flat Me's have out in the world!
|
Second Grade Amelia Bedelia Reading Project
|
Mrs. Albright's second grade readers enjoyed working on an Amelia Bedelia reading project. Students learned about idioms. Each student chose a setting from the book and created that scene. Stop by our display in the Happy Hall to see our creations!
|
Kindergarten Garden Box Project
|
Kindergarten has enjoyed harvesting our garden box! Even though the ice storm prevented further growth of our broccoli and carrots, the boys and girls were still able to classify the plants by type and size and examine their similarities and differences with magnifying glasses.
It is always a great day to be in Kindergarten at FA!

Kindergarten Special Guest Reader
|
Kindergarten's Special Guest Reader last week was Miles' grandfather,
Dr. Wayne Rentz. Miles was thrilled to have his Poppa come and share a family favorite with his friends.
|
Pre-Kindergarten Gingerbread Unit |
Last week, Pre-K finished up its Gingerbread Unit. Each day was filled with hands-on learning activities integrating all content areas to make learning more fun, purposeful, and meaningful. Each of the eight selected Gingerbread versions provided an inquiry-based learning approach by bringing forth deeper discussions highlighting geography, cultures, foreign language, cooking, and a wide range of literary elements and skills. Pre-K students invited their Third Grade reading buddies to make cornbread after reading The Cajun Cornbread Boy by Dianne de Las Casas. Other Gingerbread stories read include The Gingerbread Man retold by Mairi Mackinnon, The Gingerbread Man retold by Jim Aylesworth, The Gingerbread Boy by Paul Galdone, The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Ernst, Senorita Gordita by Helen Ketteman and Snowdude by Daniel Kirck.
