Vince Vawter + Jim Wann Wow FA Students!

Vince Vawter, author, and Jim Wann, composer and musician, presented a workshop for a musical based on the award-winning novel Paperboy at a Middle School assembly and in front of a combined group of Middle and Upper School students who participated in a focus group session for our special visitors. S tudents had the opportunity to listen to readings and original songs, then afterwards they discussed and offered feedback on what they heard.

Jim Wann created and performed in the original Broadway cast of Pump Boys and Dinettes, which was nominated for a Tony Award as Best Musical. Mr. Wann  continues to compose, record, and perform his original compositions in venues all over but can often be found at his home on Tybee Island.

Vince Vawter, a 40-year veteran of the newspaper industry, is the author of Paperboy, winner of a Newbery Honor in 2014.  His second novel, Copyboy, will be published in fall 2018 by Capstone.

Click HERE to read a blog Mr. Vawter wrote about his visit to Frederica Academy.

Mr. Vawter and Mr. Wann were extremely complimentary of our campus, faculty, and, especially, our students. Frederica Academy is very flattered that they wanted their first audience for this collaborative venture to be in front of our students. It is a testament to our amazing students and their passion for literature and the arts. We salute Nikki Walbridge for facilitating the invitation to Mr. Vawter and Mr. Wann and for coordinating all of the arrangements associated with their visit.

Wade Curruth '06 Captivates FA Students

Wade Carruth '06 was a huge hit with students of all ages when he visited Frederica Academy this past Thursday and Friday.

Click HERE to see the photo album of his visit.

On Thursday, Mr. Carruth spent time with Coach Zimmermann's Seventh Grade Life Science classes showing students a variety of predatory birds, as well as snakes, tarantulas, bearded dragons, and tortoises.  It was a great experience for the students, and it allowed them to put their classroom knowledge to good use, as all of the important information Mr. Carruth shared is currently being taught in the classroom.  This was a great way to educate the students without having to put pen to paper. The students truly enjoyed seeing these amazing creatures in person.

Mr. Carruth returned to campus on Friday and was the featured speaker at the Lower School Morning Meeting.

Following his Morning Meeting appearance, Mr. Carruth made a visit to Corn Hall where he spoke to Mr. Willis' Biology and AP Bio students about his raptors and reptiles and talked about his work with Zoo Atlanta.

Middle School Read-A-Thon Winners

Frederica Academy Middle Schoolers LOVE to read!  The three Middle School Read-a-Thon winners read almost 10,000 minutes combined.  First Place winner Fina Dooley logged 5,005 minutes, Second Place winner Carter Jules logged 2,331, and Third Place winner J.J. Briggs logged 2,163.

The Eighth Grade class took the prize for the highest average number of minutes read and was rewarded with an ice cream party. Congratulations and well done!

Fifth Grade Biome Projects

Last week, Fifth Grade students presented their individual Biome Projects. Each student was responsible for creating a slideshow for their assigned biome, along with creating a diorama, poster, or other visual aid.

Click HERE to see more photos.

First Grade Instrument Projects

Over the past two weeks, First Grade students have learned about sound. They learned that sound is made through vibration and explored pitch and volume. The teachers were astounded by the creativity shown last week as their students concluded their unit by creating their own instruments. First Grade now has a band complete with guitars, a harp, a drum, maracas, a flute, and rain sticks. The students took recycled boxes, paper towel tubes, rubber bands and other common objects and turned them into something amazing.

Kindergarten Special Guest Reader

Last week's Kindergarten Special Reader was Colbie Jane Lee's special friend, Ms. Chris Leotis Ms. Leotis read three books to the Kindergarten class. Sally and the Purple Socks, one of Colbie Jane's personal favorites; The Rooster Who Would Not Be Quiet!, a  powerful tale that celebrates the spirit of freedom;  and Have You Filled a Bucket Today?, a story that  encourages positive behavior by using the concept of an invisible bucket to show children how easy and rewarding it is to express kindness, appreciation and love by "filling buckets."  Thank you, Ms. Leotis, for joining the Kindergarten class and for reading such inspiring books!

Pre-Kindergarten Mystery Reader

Pre-K students were surprised to see a familiar face when they learned that their Mystery Reader was Catherine Holt on Friday. They loved hosting Mrs. Holt in their classroom for their reading lesson. Mrs. Holt read Where I Live by Frances Wolfe and When We Were Young, a collection of poems written by A.A. Milne (author of Winnie-the-Pooh).
