Thank You, Student Ambassadors + Parent Volunteers!

Dear FA Family,

We had a wonderfully successful Open House on Saturday! In just two hours, we had over twenty guests representing a dozen prospective students in a variety of grades ranging from PK to 11th grade. Our guests were greeted by extraordinary student and parent volunteers before heading off on excellent ambassador-led tours to meet faculty and administrators along the way. I can't say enough amazing things about all of the volunteers who made yesterday such a success!

A huge thank you to faculty and administrators Miss Fleming, Julie Ackerman, Leigh Toomey, Mike Temple, Laura Nevins, Rachael Lee, Christy Manor, Susan Jobe, Phoebe Shelton, Roxana Bush, Claudia Schneider, Tom Willis, and Steve Jobe! We were also joined by our dedicated Board Chair, Sandi Channell.

Student Ambassadors included Constance Sullivan, Britton Sullivan, Spencer Sullivan, Gillian Sullivan, and Alastair Campbell. Parent Volunteers included Dana Carter, Kristi Harrison, Alisha Seymour, and Tracey Tennant. Thank you for taking time out of a beautiful Saturday to share our school with visitors. Our guests were so impressed and will not forget the impression you made. My heart is so full with gratitude.

We are organizing similar outreach opportunities for prospective families off campus and exploring the possibility of hosting another Open House on campus before the end of the school year. Please contact me if you know of a family who would be a good fit for our school community or if you are interested in helping co-host or volunteer at a future Admission Office event or activity.

Gratefully,

Helen C. Rentz

Sixth + Eighth Grade Scoliosis Screenings - THURSDAY

Dear Sixth and Eighth Grade Parents,

In conjunction with the Glynn County Health Department, Frederica Academy will conduct a scoliosis screening to identify children with suspected curvature of the spine.

The date of the screening is Thursday, March 22, 2018. The procedure is a simple 30-second test in which the screener (School Nurse and/or Health Department Nurse) looks at the child's spine in the standing position and the forward bending position.

If your child has a suspected curvature, you will be notified and asked to take him or her to your family physician, pediatrician, or an orthopedist for further evaluation.

If you do not want your child to be screened, please email or call me before Wednesday, March 21.

Thank you.

Middle School Assembly - Greta Johnston

Eighth Grader Greta Johnston gave a heartfelt speech at the Middle School Assembly on Wednesday as students gathered to honor those lost or injured in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas tragedy last month.

Here is an excerpt from Greta's speech:

"Kindness, respect , and understanding should be the defining traits of not only this middle school and the communities that encircle it, but the golden rule of society. Since the terrorist attack that was Sandy Hook in 2012, 142 school shootings have been recorded with one on average per week. Yet something so simple as being kind might have prevented so many of these attacks. In the US one in every three students have said to have been bullied and not surprisingly, most bullying happens in middle school."

Fourth Grade Visits Fort Frederica

Our Fourth Graders spent last Wednesday discovering the remnants of the families that lived at Fort Frederica in the 1740's. They were excited to learn about several families of English settlers that lived at the fort.  The trip is an extension of their archaeology unit. They have studied five periods of significance in St. Simons Island history. A trip to the St. Simons Lighthouse is next on the list of exciting local places to visit.

Fourth Grade Pi Day Activities

Last Wednesday, Fourth Grade students celebrated Pi Day with a few fun math activities.  They measured the circumference of different objects, including chocolate chip cookies and their wrist.  Later, they created  pi bar graph sky lines.

Kindergarten Special Guest Reader

Miss Karagan Royer, a special friend to Frederica Academy, came to visit our Kindergarten class this past week!  Karagan, adoped from China as a baby, has experienced bullying in her life. She is now Miss Southeast Georgia's Outstanding Teen. She is using this platform to encourage all to appreciate one another's similarities and differences. Karagan shared two books with the class that emphasize her message of kindness and friendliness.  We wish her the very best as she makes an amazing difference in our world!

Kindergarten Plot to Catch a Leprechaun

Kindergarten was an especially busy place on Thursday as the children celebrated an early St. Patrick's Day!  They created their own leprechaun traps using a variety of materials and a lot of creativity in hopes of catching the mischievous little man.  However, upon returning from recess, they discovered that he not only slipped in and out of the classroom unseen, but created quite a mess and left treasures to enjoy!

It was a great day to be a "green " knight in Kindergarten!

Thank You, Fourth and Sixth Grade Parents!

FA's teachers and staff extend their heartfelt appreciation to the Fourth and Sixth Grade parents for the amazing luncheon they provided last week.
